Description This is the south-western view of the crusader convent castle and its adjacent fortified cathedral located in Kwidzyn (medieval Marienwerder in modern Poland). This architectural complex is a unique example of the 14th C. brick gothic architecture in the Baltic. It was built for the Teutonic cathedral chapter of the bishopric of Pomesania which was one of five bishoprics established in Prussia during the northern crusades. Inside, a monastic convent was located with cloisters on the first floor and a chapter house, refectory, communal dormitory and a chapel. The most striking feature of this fortress, however is a massive fortified cathedral attached to the eastern side of the castle and an equally monumental latrine tower, protruding into the river on the other side.

In the medieval period, Kwidzyn served as a major pilgrimage site as it was a burial place of an important Prussian saint; St. Dorothy who after her husband’s death decided to spend the rest of her life in prayer and asked to be walled up in a cell near the altar of the cathedral. Among other important individuals buried in Kwidzyn, are the bishops of Pomesania and three Grand Masters of the Teuotnic Order: Werner von Orseln (1324-1330), Ludolf König von Wattzau (1342-1345) and Henry von Plauen (1410-1414) who are all depicted on the medieval frescoes inside the cathedral. The reason they were buried here is that they were seen as unworthy of being buried with other Grand Masters in the earth brought from the Holy Land to the crypt below the chapel of St. Ann in Marienburg. Werner was stabbed to death by the other, supposedly mad Teutonic knight in the cloisters of Marienburg, Ludolf had to resign from the position of the Grand Master because he became insane after suffering a major defeat in Lithuania while Henry was deposed by his fellow brothers because he was a tyrant and ordered those who opposed him, including other Teutonic knights to be beheaded on the accusation of treason. Ironically, these are the only graves of Teutonic Grand Masters which had survived in the Baltic as the tombs in Marienburg were destroyed and robbed a number of times throughout history.

Wszystko to kwestia uporu

I am very glad you like it! Thank you very much fot the comment! Kwidzyn/Marienwerder is quite beautiful although, sadly, the rest of the old town was razed to the ground during WW II and now it mainly consists of communist style living blocks... Anyway, thank you very much once again! I really appreciate that you took your time to write anotehr comment under my photo Thanks!

What I wonder, do modern Poles more like Germans or Russians as partners now?

Hi! Sorry I never get to reply to this - I missed your question in my messages, but I think that the current situation in Ukrain can be a good answer to this - Russia is a dictatorship which makes some ridiculous accusation about Poland, violates all international laws and invades a foreign country while Germany, well Germany is just powerless and infiltrated by Russian money and agents. Just listen to Gerhard Schroeder, its amazing that a leader of such an important country can be simply bought by a foreign state... Germany is obviously a better partner as it is a democracy and we should never cooperate with dictatorships but it seems that Germany prefers to cooperate with Russia rather than care about other countries in the EU....

BricksandStones In reply to lostknightkg [2013-06-25 17:52:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes you are right, it is a bit sad really that many of the Teutonic convent castles do look a bit modern, the point is that waht survives is often the monastic 'core' of the castle and the outer walls are rarely preserved... Also, the whole Teutonic convent design is a bit different than typical medieval castle model, they had roofs with tiles and large gothic windows of chapter houses and chapels pierce their convent walls. Furthermore, in the 15th and 16th centuries a lor of arrow loops were widened to make them suitable to use by early guns (earliest recovered gun in Estonia dates to 14th C). The line of smaller windows just belowe the roof level are original 15th C. defensive gallery... Lastly, the large square windows are later, 18th C. additions replacing medieval ones... Anyway, thank you very much for the comment - as always - I really appreciate it (honestly I do ).

I am glad you think so, Marienverder is one of my favourite crusader monuments in the Baltic even thou the medieval city around the cathedral was razed to the ground during WWII and now consists mainly of communist, fairly ungly, buildings. Also, you are right to point out that brick gothic wasalso popular in Northern Germany...In fact most of the monuments on the European Route of Brick Gothic are located in Germany and I really hope that one day I wll visit the fascinating monuments of Medieval Lubeck, Stralsund or Ratzeburg. Thank you very much for the comment - as always I really appreciate you taking time to write something under my photo - thank you very much once again!

Thank you very much! I am really glad you find my describcions interesting, it is good to know that someone reads them About the buildig - to be honest brick castles in general do not look very medieval - they have tiled roofs and do not fit the image of a typical medieval castle - also the large square windowns are later, post medieval additions. Anyway - thank you very much once again for taking your time to write a comment - I really appreciate it!

A bit like Wales which despite being small is very well known for its castles. I am glad you I really enjoy various regional styles in medieval architecture, Brick gothic of the Baltic, Mudejar style in Iberia, Crusader art of the Eastern Mediterranean.... Perhaps it is because I have seen more such ‘regional’ or ‘frontier’ monuments than actual ‘core’ gothic monuments of France and Germany... Anyway, thank you very much for the comment! It's an amazing book series; the author of them died in 2011, sadly, but all of his books are incredible, including the Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series. I grew up reading them, and I still reread my entire collection once a year. If you like animals and medieval stuff, you'll love the Redwall books.

BricksandStones In reply to SafariBear [2013-06-13 16:21:43 +0000 UTC]

You do not like red brick gothic? There was a time when I also preferred architecture build in stone - the tracery patters and sculpture/statues are much more diverse and rich whenever stone is used. However, in time I started to appreciate the distinct style of the Baltic gothic more, it is very unique and creates a distinct atmosphere. Now I think it is one of my favourite styles but obviously this is just a subjective opinion have a look at the crusader castle in Kuressaare (Estonia) this is a crusader convent catle built in stone and I do not think it looks muich better [link] There is a reason why I submit only one photo per week and sometimes per two weeks, writing this describcion took me almost an hour... but I did my MA on Teutonic castles and I find these stories very interesting. Anyway, thanks for the comment, it is always a pleasure for me to see that someone cares to write something under my photo

SafariBear In reply to BricksandStones [2013-06-13 18:41:57 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it doesn't look very exciting, but it's out of *stone* :-D
It looks more serious and stable :-D

I am a child of southern Germany where all castles and churches are out of stone. So I guess it's just a matter of what one is used to...
