After French victory in the Seven Years’ War, Russia was left without significant opposition to American expansion, as the Hudson Bay Company had obstructed such expansion in our timeline. Eventually, Russian holdings in the Americas stretched from the Aleutian Islands (The Catherine Archipelago) to southern Columbia, giving Russia a significant advantage in the fur trading market. By 1826, a proposed border between French and Russian holdings was approved. Settlers continued to enter Russian American throughout the early to mid 19th century with the promise of wealth in the fur trade business. The influx of settlers only increased as more habitable and arable lands entered into the territory. By the late 1860s, with a population of roughly 750,000, the territory entered into open revolt against Russian rule after decades of harsh policies restricted the freedoms of the settlers both socially and economically. With French backing due to economic interests in the region, the Republic of Transalaska was proclaimed in May 1868.
