Description
The jaguar (Panthera onca) is a wild cat species native to the Americas. In this piece the young cub is perfectly camouflaged against the protective mothers spotted coat. As the cub is eager to explore, the mother keeps her Cub close in the long grass and retains a watchful gaze. I discovered the spotted variety of Jaguar by accident while looking for Leopard reference photographs. While the leopard has a slender appearance, the spotted Jaguar uses camouflage with strength. I found this fascinating and decided to draw a Jaguar instead. The piece took 3 weeks to create. Using a grid I carefully mapped out the spots using various grades of graphite pencil to build up the depth and finished with 8B for the eye details and spots. White gouache was used to define the whiskers.
