Description Finally, after entirely too long, I have finished my Cthulhu idol. Despite the fact that it sat on my desk for....what, four or five months?--I don't have much else to say. It's Cthulhu, you all know who he is. Instead of the traditional octopus head I tilted more toward Portuguese man-o-war, because those things are bizarre and creepy looking, and I went for a saggy, squishy, veiny look (in "Call of Cthulhu" he is described as being "jellyish" and "pulpy" if memory serves)

There are some toasty bits from the heat gun and a few other things that need ironed out; I will be molding and casting this guy in the near(ish) future, so you can have your very own jellyfish-headed monstrosity to add to the collection of Cthulhu idols all you loyal cultists doubtlessly have lining your shelves (right?)

I am currently open for sculpting commissions; more info can be found here [link]

I love the design, I think your approach works very well. Especially with the head and wings.

Another masterpiece. How tall is this version and has he been cast yet?

Thankye! This guy's kind of a whopper, probably ten inches tall or so? Can't remember exactly, haven't measured him in awhile. Pretty hefty too. I'm going to cast him, been planning on it for awhile, just need to bite the bullet and buy the bunch of silicone and resin to do so.

Love the attention to detail, and the writing is awesome, looks alien, the whole piece shape wise is like an Alien Gargoyle, the small areas that look burnt from baking actually look like rust, which is neat.

Once I cast him I'll be experimenting with several different colour schemes, like various stones, corroded copper, old bronze, etc.

Cool, it will look great in defferent stones
colours.

Fantastic work. I'd love to know how you got that skin texture... Am not a "cultist" but I was into Lovecraft for a while. Doubtless he would approve, if he were still alive.

BrittaM In reply to MTC101 [2011-07-18 19:04:03 +0000 UTC]

I'd certainly like to think Lovecraft would approve. As for the skin texture, it was a mix of techniques and tools. The folds were made by rolling out little noodles of clay and carefully blending them in. The leathery look was achieved with a needle tool and several homemade wire tools I made just for texturing, and smoothing everything down with isoproyl alcohol.

Britta, he came out great. I was lucky to get the sneak preview. The lettering have a nice alien quality to them and I'm glad to see that they are done in relief instead of inscribed. That will be a change I make if I ever revisit Cthulhu.

BrittaM In reply to zombiequadrille [2011-06-13 04:54:46 +0000 UTC]

If I ever decide to sculpt relief lettering like that again I might have to stab myself in the eye with a sculpting tool. Sculpting anything with straight edges is not one of my favourite things to do.

I guess the Hounds of Tindalos aren't on your 'to do' list then. OK, only we Mythos fanatics could find that funny, or even comprehensible.

I'm familiar with the Hounds of Tindalos but haven't actually read any of the stories containing them. Other than Lovecraft himself I don't think I've read much other Mythos authors, though I keep meaning to. Is there anywhere online their work is available to read? (My local library is very small)

Other than for HPLI don't think there is a lot of 'Mythos' fiction online, but you can check by author name and search 'online' stories. The Lovecraft Ezine puts some new stories online, and it's a pretty good site.

This is quite ghastly and exquisitely alien. I think you captured that alienness very well indeed, and you really are true to the descriptions in the story. The textures are just... marvelous. In that squishy, pulpy way, of course.

BrittaM In reply to rachaelm5 [2011-06-16 19:25:04 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I was originally going to go for a traditional octopus head, that's what I had in all my pre-sculpting sketches, but I'm glad I decided to go with a jellyfish-like deal. Once I got the clay on it, it just seemed right. And besides, octopuses are cute! And I didn't want that.

This is awesome, BrittaM. I noticed he has 3 eyes on a side. This reminiscent of Lovecraft's very own sketch of the horror in clay.

Thanks kindly! I actually came across those sketches about halfway through sculpting this and decided to add 6 eyes instead of just 2. It does make it look more alien.
