Description I have been looking at my Lovecraft chess set [link] sitting on a shelf now for nearly a year; after the fiasco with uncuring silicone I haven't had the patience to clean them up, though I keep saying "I'm going to buy GOOD silicone and recast those!" However, after staring at them for awhile I've decided I can do better, and thus sketched out a bunch of new designs. I've been especially displeased with the bases, and I'm less that happy with the designs of a couple of the pieces anyway.

I do still like this set, and, not wanting it to sit and languish unloved on a shelf forever, I finally cleaned up the uncured silicone bits sticking in the crevices (that was fun) and painted them all. I used them as an experiment/practice in painting realistic looking stone; once I sculpt and cast the new set I will be painting them not in boring black and white or light and dark colours, I'm going to do faux stone finish.

So here's Cthulhu, painted like the stone sodalite, which is one of my favourites, and coated with high-gloss finish to give the look of a highly polished stone idol.

It really looks great , specially because it's usual to find Cthulhu representations in green and this one is another vision in color. Cool!

I considered doing Cthulhu as a malachite stone like I'd done with the Old One, but it seems like most Cthulhu statues are some kind of green, thought something different might be nice.

Highly polished?? I'd have to say super-slimy sodalite stone idol... I do like the finish. That is a beautiful stone.

Slimy works too. Actually, when you pick it up and handle it, it feels slippery because of the excess of varnish on it. Like something that came out of the depths of some sunken city.

Well, yes, how imminently appropriate.
