Here is a "recent" cover I did for Marvel in whereI ripped my own idea.... [link]
DC didn't use it so I decided on my next Wolvie cover
It would be the perfect place to revisit that idea.

Nice cover! I like the inks with the Leyendecker like highlights in the blacks.

Glad u caught the Leyendecker in the work...
Im trying to figure out how to do more of that type of thing
in my work.
I actually picked up the idea from Paul Smith...
looking at his" Leave it to Chance" originals...
They made me see some Leyendecker but with ink.

I used to have fun with that too. You see it a lot in Alfredo Alcala's work.
One of my influences in using that technique was through Mitch O'Connell. When we were in school together we both loved Leyendecker, but it really showed in Mitch's work and I picked up on it.

Well, thanks. The longer I was a comic artist the more I looked backward. Old comic art, illustration, or similarly influenced is definitely my leaning.
Although I always liked more expressive, spontaneous inking, I learned to loosen up the most from doing con sketches and inking my own work on a regular basis.
In both cases I had to learn to draw in ink. At a con or on a monthly you can't do full pencils, and now I prefer not too. I stop penciling much sooner than I did in my early years and finish the drawing in ink.

Hah! I love the idea of taking an old rejected Batman cover concept to make a new Wolverine cover.
And you know what, this new cover is so good I'm glad it all happened that way.

You really nailed the faces, especially Wolverine and Kitty. The feathering in the inks completely sells the lighting.
