Description It was dawn when the two apprentices awoke. Applepaw shot a glance over in Foxpaw's direction, examining her beautiful, fox-like pelt. He sighed, wishing he had gotten along better with Twistedpaw the other evening. He didn't mean to give off such a foul impression, but he really did think that his scarred denmate might do something of the sort. The charcoal colored tortoiseshell tom poked her. "Wake up," he mewed, blinking. "We have training to get to. I'm sure Shatteredhope is bored to tears, waiting for you. It's passed dawn." Foxpaw stiffened and sat up. "R-really, I slept that long?" she asked worriedly, shaking her head. Applepaw snickered. "Of course not, but I knew that'd get you up," he mused, flicking his tail. Foxpaw grinned. "You sly dog you," she purred, pushing him over as she left the den.
Foxpaw approached her mentor, who sat outside almost exactly as Applepaw had explained. The only difference was her level of amusement. Certainly she wasn't bored, as she was sharing tongues with the Medicine Cat, Ganderfeather. "Yeah," Shatteredhope was saying, "Brokenflight and I were going to train our apprentices together." Ganderfeather nodded. "Foxpaw and Applepaw fare rather well together, I think it'd be a good idea," she purred. "Anyway, thanks for the poppy seeds last night!" Shatteredhope called, watching the snow white she-cat trot off. Ganderfeather smiled and nodded just as she entered her den, Shatteredhope returning the joyous expression.
"Applepaw," Foxpaw muttered, glancing back towards the den, "you have a great destiny ahead of you, don't you?" She sighed and blinked, prodding a leaf into the ground. "If only you knew such things." Shatteredhope observed her every move. "Foxpaw, I wouldn't worry. Applepaw is plenty capable of taking care of himself. He fares well, and I'm sure it's reassuring to him that he knows he has a friend in you."
Foxpaw looked up at her mentor and nodded, brightening up a bit. "Thanks for filling me in. That dream… it… It was a prophecy, wasn't it?" she suddenly asked.
Shatteredhope sighed, but gave a curt nod. "It was a prophecy all right. Foxpaw, let me tell you this much. Apprentices and warriors are not meant to receive prophecies. That's the leader and medicine cat's job. If Applepaw received a prophecy, he is more than an average apprentice." Foxpaw nodded, understanding completely.
"Will we ever tell him about Twistedpaw?"
"No."
"Why not, he deserves to know!" Foxpaw protested.
"Oh well," Shatteredhope mumbled.
"You're thinking too deep into this, when it really isn't your business in the first place, aren't you?" Foxpaw meowed matter-of-factly, shooting her mentor a glare. Shatteredhope grunted, but shrugged and let out a faint snarl. "I know, but I love Brokenflight. I have to look out for his apprentice." Foxpaw blinked. "But Brokenflight doesn't… He doesn't love you back," she reasoned quietly, looking off into the distance. Shatteredhope growled. Tears formed in the corners of her eyes. "I'm aware," she replied, purposely embittering her tone. "I don't need to hear it from a kitten." She stood and stormed off, not leaving Foxpaw any time to reply.
The tan-and-white she-cat stood there, staring after her mentor. She bit her lip, drawing a tiny stream of blood. "Sorry, Shatteredhope," she whispered, though she was no where to be seen, or in earshot at all. She trembled, tears trickling down her cheekbones. "I'm so sorry, Shatteredhope, StarClan, Applepaw. Please… forgive me…"

Shatteredhope tore madly through the foliage like it was weaker than paper. She stumbled over a loose tree limb and landed face first in front of an old badger hollow. She stood immediately and sniffed the air, the fresh scents flooding over her nasal passages. She stiffened. The scent of badger was fresh. She shuttered and turned, glimpsing around in each notorious place where an animal could possibly scuffle out. The deputy spotted the mammal's tracks leading out through a row of bracken and goose feathers, assuming it must have been looking after pups or something. She blinked her emerald orbs and suddenly let out a screech, a roar countering it. The badger tore at her back, Shatteredhope limply taking the attack. She had no time to counter-attack or even swipe at its face. She let out a blood curdling yowl of pain, tears rolling down her face. She didn't want to die, whether it was StarClan's will or not. She wheeled around and slashed her claws over its eyes. It snarled and smashed her into a tree, leaving her to fall there and moan in agony, blood gurgling from the tattered remains of her back and neck. She shivered and let out another screech, though it was so raspy and quiet she doubted it'd be heard.
The badger snorted and still reared up on its hind legs, shaking blood from its eyes. It stomped down and loomed over her, scarlet droplets landing on her tattered silver pelt. It glared at her, right in the eyes, as if saying, "You're so dead." Its paws receded to its hindquarters, and before Shatteredhope could say anything else, it gripped her skull and bit down, hard as it possibly could. The she-cat mustered one last whimper before falling limp entirely, ceasing all breathing.
The badger seemed to spread its mouth in a toothy grin as it dropped her limp form and turned, trotting off.
