Awesome Thylacosmilus! Many illustrations of this critter look to much like a cat, but this one is really accurate.

It has quite an unusual skull design to have the lower jaw extend down next to the enlarged canines. I remember in Some ancient felines some times their skulls did that, it makes me think of it as a kind of partial sheath or protection for the fangs. It is really cool looking. excellent.

Did you think this animal was fictional? It's a Miocene sparassodont closely related to marsupials.

that's what it was, a sheath to protect the fangs from external wear and tear.

Shouldn't the hindfeet and lower hindleg somewhat longer? I know they were unique metatherian predators, but the hindlimbs seem ridiculously short.

I know, but their no felines, the hindlimbs were shorter, and being in a flexed position they look even shorter... but you could be right.

In fact I had in mind animals like jaguar and tiger for the patterns, but you're right, its similar to a tylacine too, a cross between those animals. But I thought it would be a nice camouflage, after all is not unusual to see convergent evolution in skin patterns.

i must agree with that, there could be convergent evolution of patterns
