Description She is now finished! Well, as far as the sculpting goes. A couple little hiccups happened - there were a few splits when she was baking, which are what those lighter lines on her side are. But I filled them in and you'll never be able to tell once she's painted. And the edges of the ground contracted and lifted a bit, which I hadn't anticipated. I'm not sure what to do about that... but it's not a huge problem. She got pretty burnt on the ends as you can see, but thankfully there were no bubbles of air in the clay, so nothing got distorted at all in the heat. The teeth feel much stronger than I hoped, so everything turned out well!

Hopefully I can get her painted quickly on my days off, and maybe I'll have my last picture to post tomorrow

The splits almost look like vericose veins or scars from a fight.... This one just keeps getting more and more awesome!

I agree, and since I filled it in and rebaked it, the filled in splits look like healed scars now, rather than open wounds. You can still see the marks even with paint over it, so I'm gonna run with that Thanks!

Sweet! The burning really brings out the texture in the head and neck. Are you going to give her that dusty-between-the-scales look? I can't wait to see it painted!

You can try sanding the edges of the ground to get rid of the part that curled up...though it's barely noticeable in the picture.

Thanks, me neither!

Ooh, I hadn't thought about sanding, thanks! But after a few hours of cooling it settled back down almost to normal

What do you mean by dusty-between-the-scales? I don't have a definite idea for painting patterns yet, I'm going to try using Jurassic Park references, as well as referencing the oven-browning patters already on her, and see what works best.

I mean that dusty look where the skin below the scales looks matte rather than glossy. This guy has it [link] ostcount=116 , though that's probably from actual dust and some buffing along the spine, but I like the effect nonetheless. I also like the dappling you did on your green firelizard sculptures.

Oh dear god, I would be presumptuous to the extreme to think that I could achieve the effect that Smellybug has mastered! I love that effect too, but since this compy doesn't actually have any scales except on the head and feet, that look would be hard to pull off.

Oh well, something to work toward

It's so awesome! I love how burnt it is on its face, though you'll probably paint over it, correct? Great job!

Thank you!

You know, it's odd... I've had many people say that they like the burned or unevenly browned look on my baked sculptures, I never would have expected that  But yeah, I'm going to try to paint her today. All I know is I'm going for a dappled green, I'll play around with different patterns.

But anyway, I'm glad you like it!

You're very welcome!

I think it gives an interesting variation in markings.

I do. ^-^
