Omg, he's just so fantastic!!! Every single muscle in his body is outlined so well! It shows that you really have a great deal of knowledge about anatomy and I value that a lot! The posture of the Minotaur makes him look so strong and mighty and that flail just completes the impression!! Also, great job with the cape! The folds are all so realistic!!

I truly appreciate your very kind compliments regarding this particular sculpture. It is one of my favorites. So much so, I have not yet sold him, which rather defeats the purpose of creating him. LOL
I wanted to create the figure to exude power, since that has always been my perception of the mythological creature.

I see! It is indeed very impressive and shows the might of the Minotaur. It's really weird that you haven't sold it yet! It's all so detailed and realistic! But, don't worry, there will always be someone!

Well, truth be told, I haven't offered it for sale yet. I have it sitting on my table in my recreation room.

That's probably the reason then!! xD You need a wider audience.

I love the story of this mythical character. And I think your work here is very good. It has strength and that image bizarrely I imagine when thinking of the Minotaur. Wow ... I really like your work.

Thank you so much for the kind compliment. I have always envisioned the Minotaur as exuding power, strength, speed and sheer, unflinching command over the world it views. I tried to translate that in this piece. I am happy some of that comes through! I very much appreciate your taking the time to comment and I am happy you find my work enjoyable!

I am not a great photographer, but I wanted to try and get shadowing on him to accent the details.

Thank you! I tried to make him as dangerous and threatening as possible. I have always viewed Minotaurs in my mind's eye as creatures of vast power, strength and speed.

Absolutely and yet they're sadly neglected in modern fiction and pop culture (compared to vampires etc.) Minotaurs always seem to embody a surcharged masculine power to me and you've certainly captured it in this piece.

I agree with your assessment as far as Minotaur's are concerned. Also Centaur's and Satyr's, from my perspective. Such interesting creatures and subject to so many variations in style, substance and demeanor. Thank you for your compliment, once again! Power is what I wanted to be the focus of the piece. I wanted the viewer to shudder as their subconscious conceived of this creature striding steadily toward them.

Quite right, satyrs and centaurs have also been neglected. I think a lot of modern work is influenced by previous pop culture and so it becomes steadily flatter and more distilled with every generation (look how vampires are losing their bite, excuse the pun.) People lose the sense of the true meaning and significance of certain endlessly recycled myths. I liked your piece for a number of reasons (the use of the minotaur and its freshness among them) and it definitely has a great deal of impact on the viewer – the primordial nature of it and the explosion of energy inherent in it are both intriguing and threatening.

Yes, the vampire craze has become an item of pop culture. That has its negatives and positives, but I do find it interesting how our society cleanses old myth to make it more palatable for us. Our hero's have to be good of heart and worthy in deed, whereas the hero's of ancient Greece or Rome were seen as tragic, flawed beings. I think a hero that is bereft of scars and flaws is one that is not very interesting honestly.
I am glad Minotaur Lord speaks to you in that way! While sculpting I hoped for just such a range of reaction!

Twilight (and I’m not judging anyone who enjoys the franchise) is a typical example. All the sexual ambiguity and violence of the vampire is wiped away, leaving the myth very heteronormative and unchallenging. Vampires are no longer even creatures of the night – instead they sparkle. It’s about removing the consequences from the supernatural – both for the vampire and his human love, making it little more than wish-fulfilment. Especially when you compare it to other fictional human/vampire relationships - Armand’s fraught and ultimately tragic love affair with Daniel in Queen Of The Damned springs to mind.

Your Minotaur Lord is a very thought-provoking as well as beautiful piece and I look forward to seeing more from you

Thank you! My next piece is going to be a sparkling vampire .... ok, just kidding...

I agree completely. Society seems to want the dark removed from the legends, or at the very least, corporate interests want the legends to appeal to a larger segment of the population. Therefore they "dumb them down". Doesn't mean they cannot be entertaining. It is just troubling they feel the need to simplify the stories for everyone. It does none of us any favors.

Hollywood seems to work under the premise that nobody lost money by underestimating the audience. BTW here's a link to a phenomenal artist, Jim Fitzpatrick, who does highly detailed illustrations of Celtic myths and legends.

Thought you might enjoy his work

Thank you so much! It is really awesome to know someone likes my work that much! I normally sell my work on eBay. This one will likely be listed there also after I decide how to paint him (realistic versus simply making him look like a bronze statue). I will happily let you know when I list him, if you like. It could be a while, I do paint jobs a bit at a time.

Thank you so much for the kind compliment! It is always an honor to have my work enjoyed. I should also say, it is a pleasure that this particular piece is being viewed and appreciated in the ancestral home of King Minos (even if Crete was a separate kingdom at the time!).

If I may ask, how long did it take you to make this? (and I do understand that it isn't finished, yet).

This particular piece took me approximately 6 weeks. It is hard to give you an hour amount, because I always have 4-6 sculptures in the works at one time and I jump back and forth between them. Yes, this is not done yet. I still need to paint the statue. I will either make him look like a solid bronze statue, or I can paint him realistic colors with fur, skin tones, etc...

Your kind words really are nice. I appreciate your compliments. It does mean a lot to me!
