Description A "historical" portrait of Hijikata Toshizo , the vice-commander of Shinsengumi *.

All the Shinsengumi were good swordsmen, but Hijikata Toshizo was an exceptional one. The guy also had an extremely strong and influential personality, and made a great military leader. He was nicknamed by his own troops "Demon(Oni) vice-commander" (and that's what the kanji on the panel are)...... Which in translation to the modern language means "a total control freak with a katana"

Shinsengumi have this romantic aura of the true last samurai, so no wonder that this theme emerges quite often in the Japanese pop culture: video games, movies, and anime. However, I wanted to portrait the historical personality rather then purple-eyed anime bishonen Toshizo (even though I adore this Hakuouki version)
For the references I used the only two existing photographs (made in 1860s) of the vice-commander, as well as the photo of the statue of him. It looks like I made him a bit older than he really ever was, though (he was killed when he was 34) - guess I was influenced by a movie where he was portrayed by Beat Takeshi .
The background based on recognizable landmarks of Kyoto, where the Shinsengumi were initially located.
Under the "atmospherical" impression after the visit to the Toei studio in Kyoto where a lot of Shinsengumi movies were shot, I tried to make my picture to look like an old samurai movie poster... Yeah, so much for staying away from the popular culture's influence

Cool, I like your style in this!

Just a sidenote, your first link for Hijikata Toshizo is missing the "o", so the link doesn't go to the correct page in wiki.

Cool. I'm one of those habitual link-clickers, especially when it leads to background information.

Learning stuff is good.

I agree about learning... sometimes the information comes from a bit unexpected resources like an info to a dA picture

Shinsengumi is one of my historical obsessions. They are not widely known in the western world, so I thought I'd provide some background information - glad that someone is actually reading it!

I find the Shinsengumi fascinating, too. Just curious, but have you seen the NHK drama (2004) by the same name? I've been wanting to watch it for some time, but their dramas take so much of a time commitment.

Sakamoto Ryoma is my favorite person from that time era. (this will probably sound really nerdy but I'll say it anyway...) I spent some time visiting the various places he lived during my last couple of trips to Japan. It's fun going places and just thinking wow...this person stood in this spot. Ah, so much history...

Royoma? Heh, that means that we are on the opposite sides of the barricades!

But really, it's cool to meet someone also interested in Bakumatsu period.  Japanese history is an interesting subject.

No, I have't seen the dorama... as much as I like Taiga series, I have no time for them

Ah it's true! Japanese history is very interesting, and the Bakumatsu period is my favorite. Just so much change going on.

Too bad, but yeah, the Taigas take so long to watch. I've only watched Furin Kazan & Ryomaden completely, mostly because of the actors in them.

I wish I had more time to watch Taiga! Even besides the historical aspect - there's nothing as cool as cute guys in cool costumes!

Though to be honest I prefer classical samurai movies... Guess it's just my personality; the same thing goes to the j-rock: Visual Kei is sweet, but really I prefer cool sound to the cool look!

I like the portrait and I'm also glad you chose to make it look like him instead of the bishi version I mean yours shows off his personality well. And makes me thing "looks like a pretty cool guy"!

Thank you very much!
My interest to vice commander Hijikata started with history, not anime, so it was only natural to try to portrait a person, not the anime character... He had an extremely interesting personality, it seems.
