Description I designed this ring in a CAD/CAM class at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). CAD stands for “computer aided design” and CAM stands for “computer aided manufacturing.” The CAD program I used is Matrix and I rendered with V-Ray.

The following explanation will most likely only be understood by people who have knowledge of CAD. To make this ring, I started working on a fourth (25%) of the ring’s shank since the shank is symmetrical in four sides. This is called quad bilateral symmetry. I made a ring rail in the through finger/front viewport, split the ring rail in half, and made a planar (flat) curve in the looking down/top viewport. Then I made the planar curve in the shape of the ring rail and the shape of the curve. In Matrix we do this with Custom Rail and in Rhino we use Curve > Curve From 2 Views. After that I added profiles and swept with Surface > Sweep 1 Rail. A fourth of the ring’s shank was done, so I made the rest of the shank. In Matrix we do this with Quad Flip and in Rhino we simply mirror several times. Then I made solid cutters and used Boolean Difference to cut out designs in the shank. After that I got several brilliant cut stones with the Gem Loader tool, set those stones in the shank of the ring, and put prongs. Finally, I rendered with V-Ray.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is the best school of gemology in the world. It’s the global leader in gemological research, the world’s most respected gemological laboratory, and has done many contributions to the industry. GIA also has several schools located in different countries. Its website is at [link] .

I like the colors. I only ever mentally designed one piece of jewelry myself; a ring with a diamond in the center surrounded by seven smaller sapphires with a gold band. Yours are so pretty and realistic though.

Oh my gosh this is breathtaking...

has this ever been considered as a design for real jewelry, or is that what it was based off of?

I would buy/wear that in a heartbeat...

beautiful work!!

Thank you! When I designed this jewelry piece, I did not base it off of an existing one. However, there are so many jewelry pieces out there that it would not surprise me if one similar to this one already existed.

Purple's mine. What do you think it represents? Blue can represent ice, water, good, outer space, and storms. I want to know what purple represents.

Did you know that there is a difference between purple and violet? Purple is more reddish, while violet is more bluish. An easy way to remember this is by thinking about the phrase, “Roses are red. Violets are blue.” You were wondering what purple represents, so I looked it up. According to my research, purple combines the coolness of blue and the energy of red. Purple is known for royalty, nobility, spirituality, and prestige. It symbolizes mystery, magic, power, and luxury. Purple is often used to portray powerful kings, leaders, wizards, and magicians.
