Description (Half-Life VR but the AI is Self-Aware vs Deltarune)

Core Theme:

Outwardly eccentric but deeply troubled men who just wish to break free from their confines.

Connections:

  • Eccentric and bizarre men with strange, broken speech patterns (Coomer speaking like a broken AI, often cutting himself off or buffering/Spamton's dialogue being written in an unhinged, rambling manner, with words often being spelled in wrong or unusual ways, phrases being replaced by alternatives in brackets, some lines being entirely censored by a [Hyperlink Blocked], etc.) who, while often appearing as just kooky funnymen, are actually a lot more deeply troubled than they would originally seem, knowing more than they let on.

  • They have their fair share of moments where they switch from their usual personalities to much more ominous and sinister ones at times, and even to a more solemn attitude which can make them unusually sympathetic (Most notable example of this is Coomer's dialogue at the end of HLVRAI, and Spamton after you defeat him in the NEO boss fight).

  • Both have the desire to break free from their restraints and reach up to a place that seems beyond them (Spamton wants to become a [BIG SHOT] again, break free from his both figurative and literal strings, and reach Heaven/Dr. Coomer wants to break free from his digital confines and enter the real world).

  • Originally acting as allies and/or working with the main protagonists (Doctor Coomer being a member of the Science Team, tagging alongside Gordon Freeman through his journey/Spamton making deals with Kris and having them run errands for him), they later turn on them as they believe they are the key to their freedom (Spamton wanting Kris' SOUL, which he believes will help him achieve true freedom/Coomer wanting Gordon to take him to the world in his dreams, as in the Real World).

  • After their efforts result fruitless, their moment of insanity fizzles out as they come to terms with their situation (Coomer seemingly accepting the fact he's an AI trapped in a digital world/Spamton realizing that he'll never be anything more than just a puppet), even making it up to the protagonists in some way (Coomer rejoining Gordon's party and helping him defeat Benrey/Spamton offering himself to Kris and, by extension, the Fun Gang by becoming either the Dealmaker or the Puppet Scarf).

  • Both seem to have an obsession with a type of in-universe currency (PlayCoins/Kromer).

  • Both have a powerful super form which they obtain with the help of the protagonist (Coomer's SuperPlayer form, which he obtains after Gordon gives him all of his PlayCoins/Spamton with his NEO form, which he obtains after Kris inserts the EmptyDisk into the machine found in the basement of Queen's Mansion).

  • While Coomer is a constant ally to the Science Team and plays much more of a heroic role in his story, Spamton is much more antagonistic in nature and most of the time works against Kris and their friends if anything. For example, whereas Coomer uses his SuperPlayer form to help the Science Team in their fight against Benrey, Spamton uses his NEO form to attack Kris and their friends.

  • wayneradiotv, the guy who made HLVRAI, also played Spamton A. Spamton in the Spamton Sweepstakes.
