“The Rescue of Grogu/ Escape from the Temple!” Prismacolor pencils and watercolor on 31 x 22 watercolor paper. Before season 3 of the Mandalorian comes out, I present my idea for filling in the gaps of the backstory of Grogu. A bloodied Mace Windu, leader of the Jedi Order, rushes back to the Jedi Temple after defeating Darth Sidious in both lightsaber and force combat but was betrayed by Darth Vader. Mace rallies the Jedi, who have been led by the Jedi Councilors Shaak Ti and Coleman Kcaj who had remained behind in the temple. Escape is now their best option, and an SOS signal is sent out for help, the same signal that sends Senator Bail Organa rushing to the temple. Jedi Master Qu Rahn, a temple guard, and Master Tera Sinube entered the council chamber just in time to see Darth Vader ignite his saber in front of a group of innocent Jedi children. A terrible duel ensues that results in the loss of Master Cin Drallig and padawans Whie and Bene, but enough time was bought for Qu and Tera to escape with the children. Knight Empatojayos Brand, a fierce protector of children (who would one day save the life of an infant Anakin Solo from the reborn Emperor) finds and rescues Cassa Veila (future mother of Tahiri Veila) and leads her outside the temple. There, Jedi Librarian Jocasta Nu has cut down many vile traitors of the 501st legion and created an exit. Mace, having rescued baby Grogu and carrying him in a sling, weaves his saber in a flurry of amethyst light, and the other Jedi emerge. Shaak Ti, a master of using both a lightsaber and staff at the same time, picks of the yellow double bladed saber of a fallen temple guard and provides invaluable cover for the other jedi. Qu Rahn holds young padawan Ashla’s hand as the situation turns dire as Vader is finding his way to the group with reinforcements. Former Jedi Ferus Olin and his husband Roan Lands respond to the SOS and arrive about an Action VI transport. They are rescued, but what happened next is a tale for another time.
