BEGINNER QUEST
You’ve been travelling for what feels like forever. You stop to rest but are rudely awaken by the sound of wild dogs, they sound pretty vicious and large in number. What do you do?
A] Run, Flee
B] Hide, head for the bushes, then search for shelter.
C] Follow the noise and attack
It was such a nice little valley. Nestled between several hills, and covered in a blanket of little yellow wildflowers. It made him happy, and Nova munched cheerfully on the fresh, new grass, his tail swishing gently back and forth. A sigh escaped, but he wasn’t quite sure if it was one of contentment or sadness. And he did not feel like exploring that feeling, as it was where his thoughts had dwelt so much recently. Ever since he left his parents herd. Instead, he tried to tell himself that this wasn’t so bad, this being alone (okay, maybe it WAS, at least a little bit, but it was what he had to deal with right now and he was determined to make the best of it) – he got to go wherever he wanted, and didn’t have to look out for anyone else.
So, yeah, kind of nice. If you forgot the yawning chasm of loneliness and how he constantly wanted to turn to a companion that wasn’t there. But, hey, he wouldn’t be alone forever. He was going to find friends, and have a bunch of cool adventures and it was guaranteed that it could just get better from here (he resolutely ignored all the tales of the dangers Out Here his mother had told him to make him be careful. That kinda stuff happened to other horses – not him. He was a careful boy, just like they taught him to be). He just had to be patient and look for opportunities and…well, it would get better.
He just had to keep telling himself that. Eventually, it’d come true. Right?
Eventually, the fullness in his belly and the gentle comfort of the warm sunlight against his hide lull him to sleep, and the young stallion naps for a while in the field. It’s so nice there, and Nova wishes he could just stay and enjoy it forever…with friends, of course.
A noise in the distance pulls him out of his light nap, and his hoof instinctively stomps a warning before Nova remembers quite where he is – and that he’s alone. Lifting his head, he follows the sound with his sensitive ears. It seems almost like the howling of wolves, when he used to hear them outside the safe little valley he called home. But, at the same time, it’s different, and his curiosity gets the better of him and he stands there just listening to the noise for a while.
Until, with a start, he realizes it’s getting closer. And how deep, and angry it sounds, finally registers in his still sleep-fogged mind. Whatever they are, they don’t sound happy. And they’re coming right at him. Silently berating himself for standing still and making it easier for them to catch his scent, the young horse spins in place.
He had to do something. He couldn’t just stand here, and let them overtake him. His parents would never forgive him if he got taken down by the first danger that came his way (and he wouldn’t forgive himself, either, to be completely honest). Options, options….what were his options?
Nova knew his legs were shorter than most (he blamed his father, who had the same…affliction), and as a consequence running was out of the question. He certainly had not been blessed with speed. Fighting was not exactly a skill he prided himself in, despite the practice he’d gone through with the other youngsters in his parents’ herd. That left hiding.
He would have to hide. A copse of trees off in the distance caught his attention, and the young stallion ran for them with all he was worth, hoping he still had time to hide himself before whatever was coming towards him caught up with him.
