Description

OK I just updated this AGAIN. Instead of making a Dragon Perch Valley III (because this is getting silly) I will update this deviation and notify watchers. I don't want to be spamming the front page. This update includes more color intensity and some lighting effects. I'm totally breaking away from the original idea, but that proves I'm an artist : P That's what we do.

I'll put the last version in stash so we can see it here to compare.

And here is the previous version to that.

I'll leave it up to you which you like better, but I had to make this one, and it had to be separate from the first. I'll explain why.

Firstly I wanted do something in the first version but I failed because I didn't know how. I was thinking about it all night and finally it came to me today.

In the original version you can see quite obviously that there are separate layers going off into the distance, and there was just one layer on top of them managing most of the color, that was a gradient map layer. But I wanted to "apply the color to all layers while keeping them separate". But if I merged down the color layer it would only apply to the first layer... so I was trapped in a puzzle there...

Because of this, I couldn't add extra colors in between layers, and I couldn't control the sky color. The gradient layer on top just dominated everything. So today I was still thinking about this and I found a solution!

1 - You can save the settings of your gradient map as a custom map.

2 - Make a new gradient map on top of each layer and simply "merge down".

3 - Repeat that process until each layer has your custom gradient map. Voila!

So after I had the layers separate again there was a lot more flexibility. Now I could make these bridges which help to smooth out the transition of foreground high contrast to background low contrast. I feel like by having BOTH the stark layered different AND the smooth bridge transition, we get a perfect juxtaposition for the eyes.

I thought that might be useful for future reference.

Now I can still use gradient maps for coloring, but also separate the layers if need be.
