It was an experiment, if you look at the WIPs for this piece I competely changed how I applied pastels on building up the fave. Never done veils so it was a good practice

wow... yeah, interesting pastel, that's what challenges are for, hehe, once youยดve done them you feel better with yourself, and then think... I'd never do it again, loll

But at the same time learn lots from doing the peice, each pastel I do I learn so much about how I can push my pastels and what they will and wont do.

Is there anything you think right now that you can't paint? perhaps you just have to try more those things, and forget about the easy ones you think you can do. Or mix them.. first one easy, then another one you think you might not be able to, sometimes some paintings that look easy, tend to be more complicate, and the other way round. And pastels may surprise you as well.. making you things harder or simpler, by accident... although I bet you might know them very well by now. Which make do you use? or which ones would you recommend?

Hands are my biggest fear at the moment ... I struggle big time with them always...

I have some commissioned bookcover work to do so that is going to keep me busy for a week or so, inbetween my usual day job.

My pastels are a mix of many types, the majority being greys, prob about 40-50 shades of grey.!! But I have lots of diferent mkaes of pastel pencil and a mix of cheap and expensive pastels sticks. Al have different qualities and work differently on different paper.

Maybe one day a landscape in pastels, thats something I havent done yet..

lol.. are you kidding? I think a landscape in pastels is all I've done! lol, besides of the Still life paintings for the painting classes, while attending an academy for painting. Then that's what you should try next!

OK I will put it on my list of pastel development

hehe... well, don't take it as an order, but yeah, you will find it perhaps easier than working with pictures

incredible work its so very VERY hard to do material in pastels and i feel you have done a excellent job also this has a originality about it, unique really, for me there's a strong feel of atmosphere in that it seems alive, meaning that you have not only skillfully drawn this but you have managed to capture the expression on the models face in the colour used to give it a feeling of being.

thank you 4 using our stock as reference im so pround that you did.

featured this im journal hope thats ok.

and the larger image is from my photobuket which i will delete as soon as im finished with the feature.

I am so pleased you like it. I was certainly a challenge but also a very good learning curve for my pastels. At one stage I wanted to leave out the veil because I was pleased at the way the skin tones had developed. I tried a completely different technique on building up the skin tones as you can see in the WIPs of this piece. I definately want to try something else using this approach, but NO veils
There are soo many images you have in your gallery I wish to create into pastels. Alot of my work is based on greys and monotone work, but now feel I could have a wander into more full colour form work through doing your piece. Its all about the learning and development.

I am very honoured with the feature in your journal, I so appreciate you taking the time to show my work. Thank you for the very kind words.

some material that is see-through like that is very difficult. I would not know but atleast you attempted it. It looks great!

BTBArtist In reply to Martywolf92 [2009-10-13 09:01:54 +0000 UTC]

It was an interesting experiment, but learnt alot from the piece esp building up the colour in a different way to how I normally do it, as you can see in the wips of this piece

Martywolf92 In reply to BTBArtist [2009-10-14 04:53:01 +0000 UTC]

yes. If you are learning then that is the main thing.

Thank you. It was an interesting experiment, certainly one I wont try again in a hurry. But very happy with the way I built up the skin tones before I added the veil. Certainly will try that technique for do a straight form piece.

It seems much more experimental than many of your other works. I think it's really cool to see you play with the techniques and the WIP showing the way the colors built up was really interesting. I think you should try more pieces like this.

BTBArtist In reply to lildoodles [2009-10-13 07:41:02 +0000 UTC]

I am constantly striving to improve my pastels and try different techniques and approaches. So at times I chose challenging images to work from.
I learn alot form each one and use it in my development

Very nice work with the viel. I could imagine the headache it would cause, were I to try such a thing.

I think this will go down as having ticked the boc - Done a veil.
An interesting learning piece, esp the rendering of the body if you look at the WIPs. I tried a different approach to building up the pastels and was very pleased with it.
