Brittany ran the curry comb down the old mares body carefully, trying to rid her of her winter coat. The abused thoroughbred was only 14, but her rough past and, by the looks of it, having many foals had taken it's toll on her. They tried to send her off to a riding school so she wouldn't have to sit in a field all day, but was soon brought home due to.. 'complications.'
Whenever a student would get on her, she would take off full speed around the arena. They got her to a point where you could comfortably walk her but any gait after that was full gallop. This left the mare heavily sore and tired for the following days, so the riding school called quits. The staff at FDS saw this as an eye-opening experience. Ole' Espy had to have been a racer. They gave her a little test of their own. For weeks, they hand walked her, put her on the walker for an hour, and lunged her until she was in shape. The mare was surprisingly very willing to please humans, even though, thus far, they had treated her poorly.
Aven, a friend to FDS and a jockey, offered to be their 'monkey' for Espy's test. They brought her up to the old track just up the road from FDS. It was deserted and the buildings around it were falling apart. The track, however, was in almost mint condition.
The staff nearly cried seeing how happy Espy was to just run. So the conclusion was made.

Now here Brittany was, pondering these thoughts as she aggressively rubbed away the extra fur on Espy's neck. More specifically, where her identification tattoo was placed. Minutes passed by before she finally set the brush down and her heart skipped a beat. There, clear as day, was the tattoo. Brittany called all the other staff, and soon they were all clustered around the tabled near the cross ties looking at a laptop. The Racehorse Registry was pulled up, Zach typing in the tattoo number. Soon, the info to just one mare popped up;
Name: Black Laced Lady
Color: Black.
Foaling Date: 06/08/1999
Sex: Mare
Foaling Place: Florence, KY.
Freezebrand: 2GC00 ( OOC: Totally random, don't look it up. xD *back in character )
Markings: star + strip, 4 half socks.
Raced: Yes.

Everything matched up. The birthday, the markings, the freezebrand, everything! Espy was none other than Black Laced Lady. Days passed, filled with long hours spent googling up their mare. The staff found multiple pictures, even one cute foal picture, and 3 of her running. Plus, to top it off, they found 2 videos of her actually racing. Both were at large race events, the one in which she won the race and the other she came in 4th.
As far as FDS knows, she raced 12 times.
4 of her races were largely advertised races with very well-respected horses.
She won one of those four races. In two she came in 3rd. The last one she came in 4th.
The other 8 races were still slightly high-leveled, but not well known. In 8 of those races she won three. In one she came in 2nd. In another she came in 3rd. Two she came in 4th, the last one she sadly dropped to 5th. This was her last race before her owners bred her and sold her and with every owner she went through, she eventually ended up with the man that starved her, stuck her out in a field with mud up to her knees, and let her rot until she was rescued.
The one question was, how does such a successful mare end up in a situation like that?
FDS is planning to take a visit down to her first owners barn to ask questions about Espy.. or Lady I suppose now... The owners may not take it very well though..

Omg though.. this drawing took my four freaking hours!

Something about this mare though.. she has this very wise and understanding look to her. I knew she was special, and that she needed a story. Recently, a facebook page called 'Destiny, the Mare that Stole our hearts" posted a picture of Destiny just now surfacing tattoo, and her racing identity was unearthed, along with pictures and videos! I was so inspired, that I chose this to be Lady's story.

You'll be seeing a lot more of this mare.. mostly because I'm obsessed with her story now, and I like drawing black horses LOL.
It's just so calming!!
