my neighbors pitbull is fucking awesome.
now, my family's sheltie tired to KILL ME.
now, shelties are 'suppose' to be kind and friendly.
but Shelby is very aggressive and has huge mood swings
that are deadly...

I read somewhere that this person was forced to put their dog down because it looked like a pitbull. Not only was it not aggressive, but the dog didn't have any trace of the breed in it. In fact, it was actually a lab-mix.
Who the hell does this?!

i love Dobermans, rotts and especially Shepherds. my dad tells me these are bad dogs and it's not always the owners fault
i beg to differ. Dogs live to please their owners. they are innocent confused creatures? why hurt them for trying to please theirΒ
owners? i mean i guess after years upon years of the same ol' dog fighting with Pits and rotties, it became instinct somewhere along the line.
I figure this because I own a pet sitting business and i have for seven years. I used to watch this family's dog. three legged pit bull. sweetestΒ
dog ive meet other than my own baby. had to be put down for attacking random dogs and ppl.Β
it breaks my heart. it really dose. the dog did come from a dark past. we all do at some point.

Rottweiler lover and owner here. All dogs have the potential to be great, loving companions, or in the hands of the wrong type of owner, a less than desirable pet.Β
Bigger dogs are NOT for everyone, they require an educated owner who is willing to take that time to work with them and I can't say I would recommend them for an inexperienced owner. A lack of discipline can be quite disastrous. Unfortunately, many of these "dangerous" breeds attract the wrong type of crowd who want a pet with a "bad" reputation and then you end up with an animal that is undisciplined and out of control.Β
In the right hands, a rottweiler, pit bull, etc can be the best pet and companion. I personally have never met one with a nasty temperament, my rottweiler is a bit of a clown and has lots of love to give to our family and friends. He's a good watch dog though and will definitely let us know when he sees something out the window that may be a bit suspicious to him.Β

Bad owners are to blame... most people shouldn't have dogs. I don't want the government involved at all, just for people to use their judgement and perhaps do a little research before getting a dog they don't have the time or resources to raise properly.

I agree with this.ive had two pit bulls, one was just like any other puppy before he got sick and was put down.the other i had for nine years before her death(she had asthma) and you could not find a sweeter more loving dog.and as for bigger breeds,i used to use a rottweiler's tummy as a pillow when i got tired,as a 5 year old no less.its never the dog,it's the people who raise it.

Sounds like since they're not allowed to legally discriminate against different races, then dog breeds would be the next best thing for them.

I totally agree with you, we live in Northern Ireland and have a Rottie (Tala) and are thinking about getting a Staffie so Tala can have a friend. Unfortunatly they are trying to pass the same type of law here which our kennel club are opposing. They are already taking people's Staffies off them and killing them for no reason other than their breed. There's a word for it. Genocide!

Yeah, seriously. Where a friend of mine lives, if a dog scratches or bites you - even by accident - and you go to a doctor and tell them that a dog did it, they'll have the dog put down. So stupid.....>.<

wow that really is stupid. I know a pit bull and I like 3 rottweilers and they are the most loyal dogs you would ever meet! The government needs to stop worrying about "dangerous" dogs and start doing something about the owners that make the dogs that way.

Unfortunately, in the UK, where I live, the following dogs are already illegal under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
1) Pit Bull Terrier
2) Japanese Tosa
3) Dogo Argentino
4) Fila Braziliero
The main reason is because they can cause damage as a result of breeding, as these breeds were bred for dog-fighting, which of course is illegal today.
There are exceptions, but there are very tight restrictions on ownership of these breeds.
My sister hugged a Shetland sheep dog, who didn't like it and grabbed her by the nose. She has two scars as a result of this. I know more than most that measures need to be in place, but I don't support descrimination towards dogs either.
Good idea on the stamp.

Awesome stamp
I'm a strong supporter of 'agressive' breeds or as i call them 'misunderstood' breeds.
I currently own one purebred female American Pit Bull Terrier. I'm extremely proud to say i own an APBT. I have owned them my whole life, along with a rottwieler or two. The only breeds i'd ever want to own. If i couldn't own them i'd have to move.
I really belive these laws of banning breeds is a form of racism just againest dog breeds. Stereotyping to the extreme of killing many innocent animals due to what people have trianed their dogs to do.
I fonly people would look up the correct facts of these breeds they'd see how the media has distorted their perceptions

I knew a pitbull who hospitalized a little girl, but I was angry at the owners, not the dog. They don't operate on the higher brain function that we do that teaches them morality. It's up to owners to look after their pets if it doesn't like strangers.

Sometimes I'll just mention a pit bull in a story and an older listener will cringe at the name. What the heck? Every pit and pit mix I've ever known has been a gentle and loving creature. Montana, the dumb but lovable dog on a ranch I worked at. Bandit, a dog from the same ranch, was a pit mix, and he was goofy and sweet but very obediant. Then there are the various pit puppies I've had the opportunity to pet on buses, in vet's offices, etc.
I wish there was a stamp that flashed a nice pit face, and then a mean pit face, and then the words: "It's not what breed they are, it's who they grew up with." Or something along those lines. Heck, I may make that stamp myself someday.

I hate BSL more than you could imagine. It's one of the stupidest things out there.
I know plenty of 'dangerous' staffys that are some of the sweetest dogs I know.
But because of over in the UK you have so many dumb chav's that want to be 'hard innit' they buy the dog and have no clue how to handle or breed them. Hence the problem we have now. Which is shame since I love Staffs.

Exactly. You cannot blame an entire breed based upon the actions of one of its members. I've know pit bulls and rotties that were as sweet as can be. I've also known tiny dogs that could be vicious little critters. It all depends on how they were raised and treated, and how their owners trained them. Laws like those are utterly rediculous and prejudiced. Faved.

My grandmother used to own a rottweiler and she was the sweetest dog ever. She never even dared to touch anyone, unless she thought my grandma was in some sort of danger (which happened like, once). She never hurt anyone, so I know that rottweilers aren't "evil". I also know a few pit bulls that never hurt anything either....this bill is just cruel...
