Description

This is my quick prologue leading into hazard100 's story, "The First Star".

Mr. Veillance's job is a difficult juggling act between monitoring the Research & Development lab, keeping tabs on possible security risks, and directing his Chasers team. Unfortunately, one more aggravation is about to become Greg's next problem.

I always like to wonder who hates these calls more. George or Veillance? I'd wager it's Veillance, sense George seems more adept at giving back chat and tit-for-tat.

Mr. Veillance prefers order, rationality detached from emotion. George likes drama and pushing people to their emotional limits.

There's no question who enjoys these calls more.

SSssssoooo...

... I may have been dicking around with voices during my period of self-imposed social isolation -

I'm not saying any of these are going to be perfect by any stretch, but I've been experimenting with Greg's voice.

If you have any input or suggestions I'd be happy to hear them.

I once again find myself humbled by the amount hard work you put into one of my characters!

I certainly think Greg would have some sort of filter over his voice. He no longer has a head, so he talks through a speaker. Though I would think the filter should be more of a muffled effect than an ecco. After listening to your comparisons, I think I like your second filtered variant the best. For the most part, I think Greg should have a more casual tone to his voice. From Greg's perspective he's not evil, he's just doing his job. So his voice should be even and effortless. Except for the times when he's genuinely annoyed or upset by something, he's a character that maintains control of himself and his facility.

Muffled you say? Give me a mo...

Alright! Got a few new ones to try out -

The first two are done with a low-pass filter, the second two are done with a high-pass filter (the final one I just ramped up the db) - let me know how these grab you.

It's funny, at first I thought the first two were more what I was looking for, but after I heard the third and fourth, I realize I like them better.

Not only are they muffled he's talking through a speaker, but they also have a slight static hiss that... well, reminds me a little bit of HK-47 from the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic games.

Splendid! Any other comments?

One of the few hang-ups I've had is that I realized I'm not entirely sure if Greg is American or British or something else entirely haha - I've been going for a sort of upper-middle-class Brit voice presently, but that's just how it currently is.

Bug-Off In reply to Rythmear [2016-06-15 08:57:19 +0000 UTC]

He's fully American. So your accent IS a little off.
In fact, he's kinda got a military background. The Veillance family has been in the air force for many generations. Greg has sort've broken tradition by getting a job in the private sector, but he still uses his family connections to gather intel and keep tabs on things that might be relevant to his job.

What sort of American accent are we talking here? Boston? Deep south? Tommy Lee Jones from Men in Black? Tommy Lee Jones from Captain America? New Yorker?

... um, Midwestern, I guess?

I love that three out of your five guesses are all southern accents.

Different types of Southern Accents though

In my defense, I'm Australian - and 'Australian' has like 12 different accents.

George is self-aware enough to know the lies BioPets tell aren't true, but he doesn't care because playing along gives him favor with his masters and power over his peers.

They don't get a paycheck so much as an allowance.
And only when they're out in the field and need money to interact with other people.

Bug-Off In reply to Rythmear [2015-12-19 21:43:41 +0000 UTC]

Well, they DO feed their monsters. The underground sections of the Research and Development building have a cafeteria. Also recreational rooms and sleeping quarters. The researchers live down there for three days to a week at a time depending on their shifts, so they need places to eat, sleep, and take breaks.

The upside is they get some solid time off after several days of solid work.
