Description Damn, it feels like I spent the entire month of November working on this one comic!
What is taking me so long these days???

Anywho:
This is another blast from Diago's past. I wanted to show a little more of his history with the BioPets corporation as well as how Diago relates to his predecessor. Here we have the first time Diago met Baal. Their relationship today is complicated, but it's been shaped by two crucial issues. Can you guess what they are?

Now that I think about it, this does kind of look like your kind of story.

Kind of. xD

It's got a bit of child abuse, amoral organization, themes of imprisonment... emotionally stunted characters.

Huh. I didn't really think much of it like that...

I guess we're more alike than I thought; now that I think about it...

Funny stuff, huh?

That's really sad, honestly.
Baal didn't say "Beat you up" or "Kill you", just that he wanted Diago on his side of the bars. ("Drag you in here")
And then he confesses that he's lonely...
It's a pity, but Baal would never admit that he'd actually like Diago's company, and Diago's power of emotional adaptation allow him to simply shrug off loneliness.
Due to being the more perfected version, Diago would never need or want Baal's companionship the way Baal might crave his.
(Plus they both have issues out the wazoo, so it'd be dysfunctional no matter what)

It is supposed to be just a little sad.

Baal is still totally a villain and he's far from innocent, but I felt I could give him more depth if I could give people a peek into his world and his motivations.

I actually started drawing another Baby Diago comic a long time ago, but it kinda got lost in the mix and I never finished it.

I'd be less sympathetic if someone else was drawing/writing Baal, but for some reason your characters push my empathy buttons.
(Also, I subconsciously compare him to villains in other mediums, and he beats out the mass-murders by quite a large margin)

What would the other Baby Diago comic have been about?

Diago actually comes back to visit Baal a number of times in his childhood just to hang out and I wanted to make a comic about one such visit.

You think so?

Readasaur In reply to Bug-Off [2013-08-09 00:23:25 +0000 UTC]

Any comic with Baby Diago is going to be adorable by default.
Even the comic where it was insinuated that he was about to be electrocuted was 'cute' despite the horrifying implications.
Baby Diago could toddle into the midst of a gaggle of filthy orphans who just watched their orphanage burn down, and the scene would be adorable merely due to his presence.

Bug-Off In reply to Readasaur [2013-08-10 13:37:39 +0000 UTC]

And he's still that cute.

Readasaur In reply to Bug-Off [2013-08-10 18:26:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, personally I think he changed from "Cute" to "Sexy" after the onset of puberty, but I do still see traces of the former cuteness.

Diago would probably agree with you.

Diago, me, his legions of fans, the many, MANY women he's slept with, and even you have drawn him in a thong.
So I'd say the consensus is clear.
Results: Sexy.

Bug-Off In reply to Readasaur [2013-08-21 03:57:39 +0000 UTC]

Funny how he kinda just evolved into a sex symbol over the years.

It wasn't my intention, but people loved the sexy humor and his libido just kept growing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Readasaur In reply to Bug-Off [2013-08-23 02:08:00 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I think that's exactly why he became a sex symbol.
Because you weren't trying to make him out as one from the beginning.
We got gradually introduced to him as a really cool character who was entirely comfortable in his own skin and generally quite chill about everyone else.
Confidence is very attractive, especially when it manages to avoid being arrogance and bragging.
So when the confident, suave guy that we grew to like began to show off a lustful side, everyone ate it right up because he was already very appealing.
Diago is extremely masculine, but not the douchey "Alpha-Male" kind, more like Brock Sampson from Venture Brothers. (But less enraged)

So like a good writer, you allowed a creation to naturally evolve, and he blossomed into a stud with legions of well-deserved fans!
Good Bug, best Creator. ^__^

Oh thats one cute little f**ker right there! I like the man being experimented on by the rat, I'd totally go for pizza any day, plus why is there a heart cube from portal in that panel?

Nice origin comic, great pacing, always love your humour, beats the usual epic sadness origins we're usually subjected to. Fantastic angles as always

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bug-Off In reply to QueenBex [2013-01-26 02:08:09 +0000 UTC]

Have yourself a llama! You're the first person to notice the weighted companion cube!
That one panel is just packed full of little side jokes! You noticed the Portals reference, but it's also a play on a lab rat experimenting on a human for a change, as well as the famous experiment were a test monkey stacked a bunch of boxes up so he could reach the bananas. There's also the small dig at the fat guy who is jumping for the junk food instead of the broccoli... too caught up in his desire to think of stacking up the boxes to reach the food.

Diago's past is probably the most somber thing about his life, so I thought it best to add some humor to keep it consistent with the usual comics I make for him.

Awesome! It's always interesting to get a glimpse of Diago's past. I also like how this comic gives the reader an insight into Baal's perspective. Seems he's a bit more observant than some may give him credit for.
I wonder, does he resent all other biopets, or does he have a particular grudge against Diago?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bug-Off In reply to GrantPAdams [2012-12-15 01:47:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh, Baal is smart. It's just that when he gets mad he can't think straight. And he gets mad all the time because he's so pumped up on steroids. But isolation in the vault gives him time to cool down and think.
I'm sure Baal holds some measure of resentment for every living thing on the planet. But Diago is the one that replaced him. There's nothing BioPets could've made after that which Baal would've liked.
