Description I love the old Frazetta paintings of the barbarian and I´m also a big fan of the old 70´s comics (I think those influences shine through here). Not really liking the new movie but quite frankly Arnold was a lousy Conan back in the day too.
Did this one for the drawing jam #68 over at cghub.com.

Great illustration.  the movies are what they are, Hollywood fouls up everything they touch.  But Momoa was a far better depiction of Conan than Arnold was

Thank you. For sure Momoa has a better look (and accent) than Arnold when it comes to Conan but I do think the old movie is more memorable at the end of the day. "Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women" beats "I live, I love, I slay and I am content" for instance.

Me myself I love both movies for their individual qualities.  I kind of wish that Dino had hired Frazetta to help with the set and costume design but it is what it is.  I grew up reading Howard's as I'm sure a lot of Conan fans have and feel that he and Frazetta really understood who and what Conan was.  Hollywood dont.

Hey Danny, thanks for the kind words. I sounded a tad too dismissive of Arnold´s Conan because I do like the first movie, I just never thought he was the best choice of actor.

I´m guessing you´re talking about Arnold. Yeah, he was just not right at all. Not as an actor or the look of him. Sure sweden has some pretty ladies but I´ll vouch for Romania right now as my girlfriend is from there.

Wow! I really liked the whole composition created by the contrasts and lines. It's really sweet. I normally don't like too much this kind of drawing, but his face... and the whole situation is incredible!

Thanks! Yeah, I am a big fan of the old Savage Sword of Conan comics, especially the ones by John Buscema. I read the hell out of them growing up, then finding the Conan covers by Frazetta and that all melded into my view of Conan that we see here.

Your influences are perfectly rendered and I like the way the stare of Conan is so expressive and dark at the same time.
Your spare use of greys is impressive, giving a bit of nuance to a very monolithic piece otherwise. Simple and efficient.

fan du va ju svensk! hah! missade jag helt din Conan är betydligt mycket mer råare än vissa som ritar Conan idag ialf!nästan lite Frazetta över det, fast mer brutal. någon speciell du syftar på som gjorde Conan på 80talet? levde inte på 80talet ^^

Tackar Min Conan är nog en produkt av att jag är stort fan av just Frazetta och John Buscema som tecknade många av Conan-serierna på 70-talet och de serierna gavs ut av Semic här i Sverige på 80-talet. Jag har hyffsat nyligen köpt på mig samlingsutgåvor av de gamla serierna och måste säga att de inte har åldrats med värdighet. Kaka på kaka. Fortfarande snyggt tecknade dock.

Han har inte tecknat Conan-serien, utan gjorde endast omslag för de gamla Robert E. Howard-böckerna. Han har däremot tecknat andra serier genom årens lopp.
