Description It's Mario! But what devastatingly interesting piece of trivia am I about to reveal about this particular Mario, you might well be asking yourself. Here it is:

This wasn't supposed to happen. I was just doing some sketching after a bit of a New Super Mario Bros. session and I did a quite rough sketch of Mario in light blue pencil, as is my wont. I then went over it in normal pencil with in mind scanning it and maybe splashing some colour on. You can find that original sketch in my scraps folder, or gallery, or whatever it is.

But then as I was sitting looking at it on the computer today I had a sudden funny idea. Do you like the inking on this one? I think it looks all snazzy being inked in colour like that, and doesn't really stand out as being any more badly inked than my usual drawings. And that's significant because I expected it would.

For you see, the way I draw things is I pencil them in light blue first, and then usually ink or neat-pencil right over the top of that. I'm rubbish at tracing on another sheet, especially since the glass of our home made light box is currently cracked clean in two after Abby drew some Nemesis Fleet a little too carefully. So as you can see I require the light blue mechanical pencil to draw at all, because it doesn't show up on the scanner when you scan in sheer black & white, so I can ink right over the top and face no problems later.

Except I didn't anticipate the discontinuation of the pencil. Now I can't buy any more leads, and my supplies (while still rather generous) will run out one day. I've recently been worrying about what I'll do when that day comes. It seemed for a while to be the death knell of my ability to draw and a solution was frantically sought. But no longer! This Mario drawing represents the turning point from whence I can relax, safe in the knowledge that there is Another Way.

This picture is inked entirely digitally, in Photoshop. It took me about as long to do as it would to ink normally, using exactly the same techniques, except now there's an undo button and a pixel-perfect eraser. The answer has finally come! There will come a day when the blue lead runs out, but then I can just pencil in black and ink digitally. It is the future!!

Mario is ushering in the future with his fire flower and his pudgy face. I like Mario.

I too am learning how to ink digitally. but I don't have those blue mechanical pencil leads, plus, I heard that they break very easily if pressed down to hard. I do have a bunch of Col-Erase Pencils, but I don't know where they are . So I'm stuck with some regular and mechanical pencils. which I'm making use of. Any way... that's-a-nice-a Mario.

Haha....I steal your techniques now! Actually, its funny really, because I use exactly those two techniques together now....which is odd because essentially I'm making more work for myself, but I just find the much easier to sketch with blue at first than using normal lead straight off the bat, possibly because its much easier on the eyes whenever mistakes show and with the rough way I work, its easier to use a second colour to define the final lines.

Ironic really because I first got em not long ago when you mentioned the discontinuation problem to me, I thought I'd get some and try them out myself since I much prefer mechanical pencils. But I thought you found a new place to buy the lead since then?

Anywho great job on the pic there, a nice style for the plumber and good job on the lineart! Digital inking ftw!

Afraid not. I mean you can get blue leads all over the place but not light blue, which is the best for not showing up on a scanner. Dark blue can sometimes leak through even if you're scanning in sheer black and white (if you over-pencilled some parts, which I always seem to).

Mind you, yellow would work...

hmm well, in that case I'll have a look when I next buy some leads on thursday, I'm on my last batch so I need some anyway, I do know the place where I buy them happens to stock many colours and I think yellow was one of them, can't be sure.
