Description
Lily Gautier started her life as a seemingly normal infant but as she grew so did her magic. Like many children who are particularly gifted, it came with consequences. Once a child with honey blonde hair, hazel eyes, and rosy cheeks, the color faded from her features.
After the tragic deaths of her parents, first the mysterious passing of her mother, and her father’s suicide, she was shunned by others in her small village. Whispers spread that she was tainted by a magic gifted directly by a malevolent god. She wondered the streets, only being acknowledged by the ghosts that haunted her.
Eventually she was taken in by a Sanctuary of Kairos, a place meant to house and rehabilitate those who were not accepted by society. Frequently unable to tell the difference between those who were living and those who only she could see, most of the other residents stayed away from her. However, a kindly priest took interest and under his guidance she slowly gained the ability to differentiate the two, and how to help those lost souls that had tormented her.
Three years after the Arcanist Protection Act of 4094 was passed, and four years after her admittance to the sanctuary, a representative from the crown of Rahli came to the orphanage seeking any older children would could be of use to the monarch. Lily was taken in and trained to work as an officer of the crown starting at the age of 12. Her unique ability to cleanse areas of any souls that had not found their way to the next life allowed her to begin her apprenticeship in the dungeons of the palace, but being able to touch the souls of the living and ‘convince’ them to speak made her invaluable.
Ten years later, she is the lead interrogator under the crown’s investigative division and a follower of Kairos. Though forbidden from leaving the palace’s lowest level during the light of day, she finds contentment in the brief moments of freedom that comes with being escorted to the gallows for their cleansing.
But the escalating enforcement of the APA and increased trips to the haunted grounds beyond the palace’s walls has her questioning the work she does and if Kairos is truly as benevolent a god as she was lead to believe.
