Most people are disgusted when they find out I have rats as pets, before they even see them. I hate how some people stereotype animals, like rats, spiders, wolves, bats, or even pittbulls. So, this is the impression people leave me with about rats.Related content

You can convert a lot of people into realizing how awesome they are, but I think everyone will always know a few people that have to be loud about how they disapprove.

Ive had all sorts of pets (cats, dogs, frogs, chinchilla, rat, all sorts of them!) But id say without a doubt my rat was the pet that loved me the most. He was such a little sweetie; I miss him a lot. But now I might get rats again. Unfortunately, when I told my friends several of them grimaced and one even said she wouldn't go in my house anymore. -_- its not like they are infested with the plague or anything. Any time I try to convince them that rats are one of the best pets to ever have they think I'm nuts :U

i know what you mean when i tell the people at school that i have a pet rat they freek out and they start to make fun of me. they see them as disgusting vile creatures but i know that my little girl is not like that, i love my baby to no end, and i do not care what others think of her.

I love owning my rats. As you said- a lot of people fear them.. However the top one and the middle can be mixed aka: sewer rats. I have never met one, but my mother shudders every time she has to visit my place and I have my ratties out. I will say though, that younger generations are becoming more accepting towards having rats as pets, even though the elder generation still sees them as disease spreading vermin. :S

I didn't even realize the extent at which people disliked rats until I got one. I can't even begin to understand it half the time. Especially with how loving he is. I've had him for three weeks, I believe. He hasn't bitten a single person or been hostile in any way.

And he most likely never will in his short life. I find that people that grew up as kids with wild rats in their houses are the people most disgusted and afraid of them.

Hmm, we had mice in my house as I grew up and I used to feed them. I got in so much trouble. Finally, I begged my parents to use the live traps for the mice.

I have two unbelievably adorable male rats. My sisters has three females, our family has had rats for about ten years now. They are the best pets and I agree with what you're saying with the whole stereotyping thing, it angers me.

i have two little rats of my own, and they are the sweetest little things in the world.. i hate how people stereotype as well.. as for pitbulls, they're as sweet and loving as any creatures, and just for a bad rep in the past, people hate the poo things.

unfortunately, a mass majority of the human population is ignorant and intolerable to things they have a lack of understanding for. I imagine I will receive the same flack from certain people once I adopt my rat. Waiting for tax return to come in so I can purchase everything. love the image.

I agree full heartedly with your views. I got 4 little ratties, and i have already converted a few of my friends to the Rat side. haha My house mates never liked rats, wouldn;t touch them and said the only good rat was a dead one... but now they love them they play with them and let them crawl all over them,. It was a dramatic change but im glad they now get along with my babies and see them the way i do. My boyfriend as well he is now a Rat lover. He told me the other day that he never thought he'd be a rat person haha i sure proved him wrong ^_^ He's now taking one of my babies to live with him its just sooo cute.
So peoples oppinions on these gorgeous little creatures can change it just depends on wether they want to give the rats a chance or not...

I don't like how when most people hear I have a rat, they start lecturing me about the plague and how my rat is probably a descendant of those "disease infested vermin". Yeah, he probably is, but they're great pets.
Very comforting, too. My rat will sleep in my hood whenever I go to the mall and bring him along.
Although when the usual "omg im so kul u guiz" girls are there, they start saying stuff like "eww.. she has a rat with her!" and making gagging noises and such.
