Description This is Morbo the whale, creepin' under a bridge.

Artist Statement for portfolio as a whole: Traveling from libraries to theatres, children are witness to incredible things, from talking lions to flying horses. They believe the world is full of adventures, treasures, and wild things waiting to be found. Childhood is a time spent in elaborate dreams, but we grow to find the treasures are taken, wild places are dying and animals are killed daily. My concentration depicts the curtain of childhood discovery as it is unraveled into cynicism.
To show my idea in my concentration pieces I cut animal shapes from wood, painted them in bright child-like colors, & decorated them with simple & abstract shapes to lend them a whimsical air. Later, the designs on the animals grow less abstract, forming recognizable images such as the planets in work 10. I also gave the animals a bandage as a symbol of the “injuries” (all are endangered species) inflicted on them. Then I photographed them outside where a child would imagine them & manipulated the background colors to change the mood of the images as the series progressed. I moved from oversaturated backdrops, such as in works 2 & 3, to more somber, mellow settings like 10 & 11 to illustrate the progression of disillusionment. Texture was a another major focal point in the images, advancing from the soft mud & water from works 1 & 2 to the raw, broken wood in 10, & the thin, prickly interwoven boughs in 11. I ended the progression appropriately with work 12; its sharp pitted bricks & nearly monochromatic color scheme illustrate the end of a phantasmagoric childhood & an awakening to reality. The colors from all the previous works make a faint reappearance in 12 as a radial streak, smeared like a crushed bug behind a cutout of a human; an image symbolizing the realization of humanity’s subjugation of the animal kingdom.
