Description Over the past few months, I have been playing Earthbound whenever I had some free time and i've just recently beat it. When I got a SNES this past christmas, I remembered that a friend of mine owned the cartridge and I decided to borrow it from him since i've been wanting to play it for some time.

Now, I have never really liked RPGs. In fact, before playing Earthbound there were only three RPGs I actually liked. But i've just been so curious about this game after hearing about how unique it is and whatnot so I decided to give the game a chance. When I started out, this game reminded me why I hated RPGs in the first place. I died so many times in the beginning due to my attacks randomly missing at critical moments and I wasn't really used to the game's health rolling counter yet. I also didn't like how I had to grind for a bit which is one reason why I don't like RPGs and I was still in Onett. Normally, I would've just given up at this point but there was one scenario I heard about that I really wanted to see (Poo's Mu training) so I decided to tough it out and do what ever it takes to get past this point.

After I reached a decent level, I eventually got past Onett (damn you Onett police!) and moved on to the next town. I didn't have too much trouble and I eventually rescued Paula. At first I was like "Yay, now to bring her back to her parents" and when I did, she kept freakin' dying! This was before I knew you could revive your friends at a hospital so at that point, I kept restarting at my last save. I eventually learned that one way to keep her alive was to level her up by fighting some weak-ass moles in a cave near where I rescued her.

I did just that and thankfully, she leveled up a lot in a short amount of time. So yeah, after all that I realized that after I got my first party member, the game got a lot easier, especially when fighting multiple enemies which was such a pain in the ass when it was just Ness. And after I got Jeff and Poo, I actually enjoyed fighting lots of enemies.

So I started to like this game more and more the longer I played it. I liked all the references it made to certain bands and their songs and how it would break the fourth wall at times. I also really liked how weird and unsettling the game could be at times. I also liked the dialogue from different NPCs and even from the enemies, one of my favorites being "...and you're gonna burn in he- er, you'll go to heaven" which was spoken by the monster you fight on the top floor of the fourside department store.

So after finally beating the game, I decided to do a tribute to it. Out of all the things I could've drawn, I depicted Jeff making things out of broken items whenever you spent a night in a hotel. Why? I dunno. I guess I just wanted to draw them sleeping or something. And now I can say that there are only four RPGs that I actually enjoyed playing.

It makes me so happy that Earthbound still has a following today (or that anybody even knows what the hell it is). I saw a Ness cosplayer at A-kon a few years ago and stopped him from behind my artist alley table to ask for a photo and I NEVER do that.

I bought a great off-brand console a few years ago from Think Geek that plays NES and SNES games for like $40 and the first game I re-played was Earthbound. That game will always hold a special place in my heart because the first time I beat it was while playing it jointly with my older sister who passed away in 2010 from breast cancer. I always think about her when I play it now, so it's a nice personal memorial thing for me.

Very cute artwork, too, btw. A suggestion about the lighting, though: since the window sill looks like a light blue from (I assume) the moon, it would look good to draw a transparent box of that blue color on the floor with the window panes cut out of it. Then make the highlights on the inside of the curtains around the window, the back of Poo, the left side of Jeff, and the end of Paula's bed that same transparent blue, and the highlights on the front of Poo and the end of Ness's bed the dim transparent yellow color from Jeff's light. It'll give the image a lot more atmosphere, imo.

Thanks for the comment, and sorry to hear about your sister. At least you two shared moments from an awesome game such as Earthbound.

And wow, my first critique, thank you. I agree with everything you said and believe me, I would've spent more time on this but I was juggling between doing this and working on finals for school, which I know is never a good idea, but I wanted to keep the feeling of finally beating the game fresh in my mind while drawing this so I wanted to get it out of my system as soon as possible so I could get back to my schoolwork.

Also, looking at it again now, I was probably on the notion that since most of the environments in the game had flat colors, that probably led me to think that I didn't have to worry about the lighting too much and add the fact that I was kinda rushing to get this done, ha ha. But ima definitely touch this up a bit more when I get some more free time.

Also, your first paragraph reminded me of this one time I was at Anime Expo 2009 dressed as Samurai Goroh from F-Zero. I was walking through the artist alley and one guy called out to me from behind his table. He was pretty stoked and he told me I was the first Samurai Goroh cosplay he ever saw and he asked for a photo and even gave me some stickers he made for free. I guess it pays to dress as not-so-popular characters for cons, ha ha.

You're welcome.

I figured that this was just a fun little piece so that's why I only made suggestions about the lighting since you had some highlights going here and there. I usually take things for my fanart and transfer them into my illustration style that is a lot more western animation realistic, so I always think of it in a more real way in terms of lighting and atmosphere and such. I totally get what you're saying about it being simple color like the game itself was, though. You kept the simple slightly charicature-ish look of the characters and environment in tact and it works well, don't get me wrong.

I also very much get the whole school work thing... I finished college almost five years ago but I still have stress dreams about deadlines and exams now and then.

Hah, if I'd had anything EarthBound in my stock I totally would have given the guy a bookmark or something for free just because his cosplay made my day. The existence of groups like UrfBound the other cosplayers I've seen here and there at other cons makes me think it might not be a bad idea to try to draw some EarthBound fanart and see how it would do. I loved the game so much and I think it would be fun designing Ness and the others as realistic kids/teens.

Now that you've played through the second one in the series, you need to play MOTHER and MOTHER 3.

Were MOTHER and MOTHER 3 ever available in English? As a rom or anything?

SnowFox102 In reply to KrisCynical [2012-03-11 23:29:57 +0000 UTC]

MOTHER was translated by Nintendo, rebranded as Earth Bound, but was never released. A single dump cartridge made it into the hands of a fan, who created a ROM from it. The people that worked on the translation were actually happy about it, because of the work they put into it. Since MOTHER 2 was released as EarthBound, fans often refer to the English version of MOTHER as EarthBound Zero. Recently, the GBA version that is part of MOTHER 1+2 was translated by the same person that did the MOTHER 3 translation (Tomato, a professional translator) and a ROM patch released. The Nintendo localization had some odd changes and slightly different dialog, hence the fan translation.

MOTHER 3 was never even translated. But the fan translation project has made at least a couple of language patches, one of which is English. I've played it, it's great. You can find the patches (but not the ROMs, you have to find those yourself) here: [link]

Excellent, thanks for the info! I knew there were unreleased games related to EarthBound that were titled MOTHER, just not the specifics of them.

I've never downloaded a ROM before but I'm sure my niece can help me there. She plays so many of them for games from the early consoles that we got her a hand held ROM player and a USB NES controller for Christmas! I grew up on the NES, SNES, and 64 and then introduced her to those old games through my consoles when she was little and would spend the night with me. By the time she was ten her favorite game ever was Ocarina of Time on the 64 and she was just as excited as I was about the 3DS remaster (and it made my geeky little heart so proud!).

It's nice to know that at least in her case some teens (she was born in '96 so the game cube and PS2 were her first consoles) can still appreciate how good games from the NES and SNES were on concept alone even when the graphics and game play were kind of rudimentary.

I looked at your gallery, btw... your plushes are adorable!

My younger brother is even older than your niece, and he loves the classics. He was the one that got me to play EarthBound in fact, he has a physical cartridge. Thanks for the compliment on my plushes, I want to make some MOTHER critters soon.

I had a brain fart and didn't finish my comment on this picture! XD Having Poo sitting up in the corner is a nice touch. I always thought it was funny how often Jeff will skip sleeping. XD Have you ever listened to Fobbies Are Borange (an EarthBound radio play)? They reference that by saying Jeff NEVER sleeps. XD

Very good, one of those quiet moments in a game that most people don't draw. In a world as weird like that these four children deserve their rest from their world-saving adventures, well except for Jeff who is always fixing stuff.
Good job!

Thanks man. And I guess you're right, a part of me wanted to draw this because I didn't think anyone else did. You also gotta hand it to Jeff. Despite his lack of psychic powers, the things he would make were so useful.

Was that last part a question?

Anyway, i'm glad to hear that you're happy to hear that I played Earthbound (I think you said at some point that it was you're favorite game right?) I see now why it has so many fans and I consider myself one now too. I really wanna try the other games now. Though, I read that the first one was released on Famicom in japan and was never released over here. Same thing goes for the third game although I have a better chance at playing that since the GBA is region free so i'm able to play japanese gba games on my SP. The problem is that I don't know japanese and I found Mother 3 being sold online for a really high price. I found out that there is a fan translated ROM of the game that you can download but i'm one of those people who prefers to own a physcal copy of the game. *sigh* Ah well, I could probably just look up playthroughs of the games on youtube.

No it was a typo which I somehow failed to notice, forgive me :U

I played all the earthbound games and I am quite a fan of the series. Yes, Mother 1(Earthbound zero, the one before this game you played)didn't make it overseas as well as Mother 3. IT REALLY ANNOYS THE SHIT OUT OF ME AGH. All three games are still accessible in Japan and it's better to buy offline than online; cause that price is probably a ripoff.

But yes there's a fan dub for the game. But if you don't wanna do that, I suggest looking for the many vids on Youtube. HAPPY HUNTING. |D;

What are the 3 other RPGs you like ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BurgerKiller In reply to ShiningRayWolf [2012-03-01 21:55:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, since you asked:

-Paper Mario. I've played the first one on the N64 and the sequel on the game cube. One reason why I enjoyed these games was the battle system. Unlike most turn based RPGs i've played, instead of just choosing an attack and a target and just watching some animation, you actually have to pay attention. For Mario's jumping attack, if you press the A button right when you hit an enemy, it'll do more damage and sometimes even let you jump continuously until you miss the button press. I also like how you can take less damage when pressing A right when an enemy hits you. These are just a few examples but since I also enjoy playing fighting games, the attention to reaction time and timing button presses is probably what made fighting enemies in these games fun for me. I haven't been able to play Super Mario RPG yet but I hope it has a similar system to this and i'm looking forward to the sequel on the 3DS.

-Legend of Dragoon. One of the reasons why I liked this game is the same reasons why I liked Paper Mario. When you attack, you have to press a button right when you hit an enemy. Except here, there's a guage to let you know when to press the button. The really fun part is when you use really strong attacks that do a lot of hits and the timing on these usually involve a certain rhythm to follow. Missing a button press not only means you'll do less damage but your combo will end early and you would've wasted your meter.

-Breath of Fire 4. I haven't been able to play any of the first three games but I got this one as a gift. The battle system for this game was a more traditional turned based system and didn't require timed button presses but one thing I found interesting was combining different magic attacks to do more damage. For example, having one character do a wind attack and another do a fire attack would create a flaming tornado which I thought was pretty cool. I also liked this game because I was able to get through it with out having to grind for a really long time so I guess it was geared towards more casual players or some thing.

I tried playing some of the more popular ones like final fantasy or some thing and I would get tired of dying at one part and I would get bored of trying to level up because the battles just consisted of going through menus and picking attacks and targets and just watching the animations and repeat. I know Earthbound did the same thing and it didn't even have battle animations but a few things kept me interested enough to not get bored. The trippy backgrounds were nice but what I really liked was the music that played and how it would be different depending on the enemies you were fighting unlike most RPGs that use the same music for each encounter. I also really liked how even when an enemy does enough damage to kill one of your party members, you could still save them by healing them before their health reaches zero. The vast amount of weird enemies was a nice touch as well.

Sorry for the long reply but if you know any other games that have similar battle systems to the first two games I mentioned, please let me know and i'll look them up.

You should try giving "Super Mario RPG" a shot on the SNES, too. It's similar to Paper Mario with having to press the buttons at a certain moment during the turn-based battles to make them more potent.

The only other true RPG that I've ever REALLY enjoyed was "Xenogears" for PlayStation. I think it's available on PSN now for 8 to 10 bucks.

I've been meaning to give that game a try which is why i'm currently hunting down a copy. A friend of mine had Xenogears but I don't think he has it anymore. I remember him talking about how good it was though. If it's on PSN, that's great but I don't own a PS3, so i'll probably have to add it to the list of games I need to hunt down.

Xenogears and Ocarina of Time were basically junior high for me so they both hold a nostalgic place in my heart. Good luck on your hunt for copies of Xenogears and Super Mario RPG.

I think for the Paper Mario battle system, there's kind of the same thing in the Mario & Luigi RPG series.

It's okay about the long reply ^^

Either I've been looking in the wrong place, or the price is not the right one.
