With Penny, it was when a friend of mine thought about her being older engine back in 1800's (which is also how Timothy started his life as a totally different engine before he was turned into the protoype for the E2 Class). He and Penny were very close friends for many years... but around the end of the 1800's and into the early 1900's, they became a close couple, being deeply in love with each other until they were taken apart to work for different railway companies. Timothy was later rebuilt into the prototype of the E2 Class in 1913.
Timothy and Penny would be reunited one day on The Kirk Ronan Branch (where Timothy was being kept at the time) however it was would be their last for Penny was sent to work on Sodor due to it's slow growth and one night in 1913, a year before Timothy's death, she was carrying the mail train and her breaks failed (much like what happened to James on his first day on Sodor). Penny derailed after going over a curve and crashed into a village that was located near the hill, instantly being killed as were her crew.
Timothy would hear about Penny's death and he felt deeply saddened by it... he would somehow recover but in the back of his mind, he still thought and remembered about his loved one. And as we all know in 1914 just before Thomas came in 1915, Timothy would have a tragic accident of his own, which was a suicide crash, mostly to get revenge on the old Controller who hated him and to escape the painful loss of Penny so he could be back with her.Β
But in the aftermath, both Timothy and Penny's ghosts haunted the railway, both searching for each other.Β

Wow, that explains a lot about Timothy's backstory and reason for suicide. Now i feel bad for him... well maybe a little. (In my Roblox Rps Timothy hates me and so he sometimes follows me around and try to get revenge on me for some-in i forgot long ago that made him hate me)
