Description DOH!  Damned thing broke after 3-1/2 years of solid use (and a number of floor drops).  I was just brushing off some lint on the rubber grip and the whole thing separated.

Is that normal for them to break after only a few years?  You'd think something as expensive as a Cintiq might come with two pens.

Sometimes it's amazing how many people seem to have a Cintiq, even sometimes people who just seem to literally doodle stick figures or are just very very beginner artists.  I've never even used one before.  I have a 2009 Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet, with the original pen even.  I've used it for everything for eight years now.

"Normal"?  No idea. Like Rezo said, it's also "hours" of use, as well as treatment. It's a lightweight item, and lightweight materials can break easier. I've dropped it a number of times over the last few years. The initial break (the back casing sliding off) could have been caused by a simple plastic worn-out tab that kept it in place. But I couldn't slide it back together all the way. Maybe something was blocking it. I took it apart to see what it might be (using some YouTube videos as help), and all the fiddling cause other pieces to fall off (a few pieces of computer parts near the rocker switch). It just got worse, and I realized, no time or money will be worth it over just buying a new one at that point.  I wouldn't take one of these apart if you can avoid it.

Keep in mind that you need to consider 'hours used' and not 'time since purchase'.  I'm sure you use it quite a lot, and maybe the wacom pen is more significantly more durable, but if you're really curious about it's lifespan (aka - you're considering getting one) you and BustArtist should probably PM about that.

As far as ppl that are 'basically just doodling stick figures' you never know how people come across the tools they use, correctly or incorrectly, there is a lot of misinformation about virtually every product on the market, and a lot of times it comes from that product's marketing department   Often using the wrong tools, either to the job at hand or to the person using them, is part of the learning process.  With my own interests I've seen, quite often, where people think getting the 'best' (often expensive or most expensive) tool for the activity will magically make them better, but nothing can supplant direct experience.  In your case, you definitely have *plenty* of experience, and maybe a 'better' pen would allow your art to get 'better', maybe the tech is holding back your ability.  But I know absolutely nothing about this tech, so I'm going to stop there as I'm just trying to 'frame' the situation, not tell you what to or not to do/buy/etc.

Also, I just recalled my only experience with digital drawing and pens; on a Note 2 and its included stylus.  I found it to be a terrible experience, but I may just be really bad at drawing lol

Yes, it's normal in this economy of planned obsolescence.

Not cool. I treat mine like glass and I know it is wearing out. Looking to order a back up one after seeing this.

It's a pricy thing to have a dupe on hand. But if you can't wait a week should it happen, it might make sense.

Yup. I just ordered a new one for my 21UX. Fortunately I have one of the early models and the replacement ones are not too bad. I just won't drink beer, eat food or drive a car for a month or so to offset the cost.

Nah.  Couldn't get it back together. Then, pieces of the computer board fell off. No glue for that.

How long will it take to get a new one?

BustArtist In reply to VivaLaGorilla [2017-04-01 16:29:02 +0000 UTC]

Paid for 2-3 shipping (they wanted $75, $5 more than the pen itself, for 1-2 day). Hoping for mid-next week.
