nice shot! I tried this trick with the aperture you told me about, and it worked fairly well. I just have to focus properly in dark conditions...

Yes, focus can be a challenge in these types of shots.
For this shot I locked focus (then popped it onto manual focus) on the furthermost light and then re-composed my shot. as it's a small aperture the whole scene is in focus as the DOF is pretty much everything

yeah, that is true actually. It's just a matter of finding the best method to focus the shots in correctly. I will definitely try that, sounds and looks like it works for you
