So I stumbled across this photograph on tumblr and decided that I wanted to draw it: [link]I kind of forgot that while my drawing skills are currently completely sufficient to make a nice drawing of it, my watercolor skills are... well, lacking, so I spent about three hours over this, cussing and getting rather frustrated XD I don't like the outcome much, but it's my first "true" watercolor picture and I decided to post it so I can look back in a year or two and see how far I've come.
If anyone has some pointers on what I did wrong, please let me know. I tried to work from light to dark and build texture with colours instead of lines, but it didn't turn out well. I guess I just tried something way too difficult for a start.
Pencil and Schmincke watercolors (student quality) on boesner aquarelle 300 paper.
edit: okay so I slapped some more midtones on it - not really elegantly because I don't have so much time to spend on a basically already lost piece when I should be working on my diploma thesis instead, but I wanted to see if it gets better and I think that it does. I'll just leave it like that now and do better with the next picture.

I am not experienced in the use of watercolor, but your drawing to start, i mean the perspective, is good. From there it can be hard to make the transition from the linear aspect to the recognition of shapes and the textures. But it is good you worked to build up the value from light to dark. In that sense, I think you can place some more of the darker values found in the picture to establish a wider value range. It increases the contrast and the feeling of depth. The deep dark you have on the bike and bottles are almost exact, so they can serve as a good reference point to judge the surrounding values.

Thank you so much! You are right, there is a gap in values between the black parts and the lightly coloured rest... I'll try to get my courage up and add in more midtones.

Ich versteh jetzt gar nicht, warum du so unzufrieden bist und deshalb kann ich dir nur schwer konstruktive Kritik geben. Aber vielleicht liegt es daran, dass du das Foto so sehr magst und es einfach immer schwierig ist, etwas abzumalen. Zumindest gehts mir immer so und das ist einer der Gründe, warum ich eigentlich nie mit Vorlagen arbeite... weil mir meine Version davon dann immer mies vorkommt. Besser ist es, wenn ich nicht mit einem anderen Bild, sondern draußen an der Luft arbeite - also direkt irgendein Gebäude skizziere. Und was ich so gesehen hab, hast du das ja auch schon öfter gemacht und bist ziemlich gut darin!
Dabei war das sicher auch eine gute Übung im Hinblick auf Perspektive und so 
Tut mir leid, das war jetzt viel blabla aber wahrscheinlich keine große Hilfe. ^^'
