I love Akira. The visuals are stunning, the animation techniques clever, and the whole grungy vibe is SUPER EFFECTIVE. (K/O) When I heard about a Hollywood live action adaptation, I was a bit concerned. Another whitewashed anime... taking Akira out of Tokyo seemed to be missing the point. Maybe if it was handled by expert hands...
Anyway, while looking at the tentative cast, it lists ol' Robby Pattinson as a potential Tetsuo.

Yeah, pretty much. But then again, who wouldn't want to see Robert explode into a squirming mass of tendons and cords?
My friend told me that they had scrapped this project, but they seem to have updates from just a few days ago. Any news? How do you feel about this film?

I'd just like to point out that the acclaimed Akira animated feature is in fact a complete bastardisation of the original manga. The anime just isn't credible when the manga pre-exists it. So don't worry about the possibilities of a live action, sit down with some tea and read the manga. It blows the anime out of the water.

I try not to let the film get to me, since it seems like it's doomed not to be anything special. If the movie makes me laugh so hard I pee my pants--well that's another story. The more ridiculous, the more I want to see it.

Honestly, my biggest concern is the white washing.
The actors they have lined up to play aren't bad actors, no matter how many AKIRA fan girls want them to be.
In fact, I've met very few people that seem to hate Robert Pattinson for any legitimate reasons. People only really dislike him because of the Twiligh fandom, which isn't a very valid reason for hating anyone.
However, I can't believe they didn't even consider any Asian American actors. Seriously? You're going to keep the names Tetsuo and Kaneda and give them to A-list Hollywood actors? Jesus Christ.

The visuals for the movie are so Japan... the signs, the colors, everything... it won't look right in New York, nevermind the casting.
If they want to adapt an anime and have it set in the western world with white actors, why not do something like Full Metal Alchemist? Hellsing? Black Butler? (ok, those were all set in Europe, but, you get my point) for goodness sake.

I usually wouldn't mind the "white-washing" as long as they keep true to the spirit of the original and do it for the art. Akira's supposed to be a gritty, graphic, philosophical cyberpunk mindfuck a la Blade Runner meets - well, something. I'm all for a live-action western adaptation DONE RIGHT, but this is just ... just ...

Personally not an Akira fan, I gave it a shot but the old purple kids just disturbed me. It was beautifully animated but I just can't look at those old purple kids again.
