Overall
Vision
Originality
Technique
Impact
Now, this is my first critiquΓ©, and I can be a harsh critic, so bear with me.
The Good:
I gave this shot a great score for Impact, because I felt that the majority of the elements present (mainly the dark, thick clouds) lead the eye nicely to the focal point: a single, bright, and powerful-looking bolt of lightning.
The Bad: I gave the piece a somewhat low score for Vision, because much of shooting lightning is luck and technique, rather than a set-up, pre-planned result.
Originality takes a slightly smaller hit since although lightning against a stark sky is a fairly common type of shot, it's a rather compelling arrangement of clouds, and rather than a sky full of random light, there's that one amazing, focused, contrasting bolt to grab the attention.
The Ugly: Overall, the Technique seems good. Nothing seems particularly over or underexposed, and the overall framing is good. My only complaint is the bright segment of cloud on the right (lit by a stray bolt of lightning). It seems to want to draw the eye away from the focal point of the main bolt. Although that clearly wasn't something you had control over at the time, cropping it out may have lessened the distraction factor.
Overall:
I love how the clouds seem to be swirling around, converging on the point where the lightning is emitted, as if it was a massive alien ship, or sentient presence focusing it's power to attack.
The sheer size, and deep darkness of the clouds dwarfs the comparatively insignificant city lights, and tiny power lines, as if they're attempting to show mankind how to harness true electrical power; and it gives the piece a powerful, ominous feel. The choice to frame it vertically somehow seems to add even more power to the downward thrust of the lightning.
Again, I'm a harsh critic, and though a few small things are holding it back from a higher score, I really do like this shot.

I wouldn't do any modification to the image such as cropping the light at the right. It shows the edge of the storm updraft. Cropping would affect the scientific value of the photographic data.

Yeah, should really go there once.. Here we are lucky if we get even one lightning strike in a minute..
