In Chinese mythology, water is the domain of the dragon, though the Guardian Dragon Meng Zhang element is Wood and the Huang Long the Yellow Emperor Dragon's element is Earth, the quintessential element of the Chinese dragon is Water as opposed to it's Yin counterpart the Chinese Phoenix or Fenghuang who's element is fire. There are also dragons of the elements Metal and Fire, but they are not as common.There is a legend that if a humble carp fish swims up a waterfall and crosses the dragon gate then it is rewarded by becoming a dragon!
