I think what intrigues me are the shapes of everything and leading lines they create bzed, of course with a better scan this is really priceless! What reallt catches my eye are the man and then the face in 'reflection' on the paper he is reading, as if he is reading about himself; it maybe his past, present, future, etc.

A first sight, I would say wrong f-stop because it seems slightly too bright, and dof is too short. That said, if you do you're prints by yourself, it could be exposed a little longer.. and the expression on the kid's face is ledgable after all.
I like the fact that the picture seems two-sided, all the faces being on the seperation line.. but I do feel a dark figure on the left, sitting in front of you maybe, would've balanced the picture better..
It's a shy but sensitive streetshot.. with definate aestetical appeal, well done!

There we go - I have a better scan. That won't fix the problems of shooting in "street" style in the underground with a too slow film, but at least it's not too bringt anymore, and the dark blobl on the old man is gone, too.

thanks a lot for your comment!
please blame the scanner for the brightness, the scanner SUCKS - but I hopefully will have acces to a Nikon 9000 soon. the neg is well exposured.
with the f-stop I only had the choice of f2.8 because a longer exposure time than 1/60 does not really work well in a moving underground train. loading a film with a higher speed into another magazine would have taken too long, so that was the only way to go. If you look well you'll see, that the focus is more on the newspaper accidentally, not sure if that's beacuse of the moving train with was shaking my legs - I had the cam lying on them so I was able to view trough the viewfinder from top - or because I was not able to get my head close enough to the cam to focus well in that position.
thanks again for your comment, unfortunately this type of comments is really rare on dA.

that white smudge in the background is kinda distracting.
the overexposure makes this a very poignant capture though.

I love it when photography becomes more than 'just capturing'.. This picture tells a whole story and not just because of the title you added. I had a long talk to a friend of mine about this just last weekend. For me photography is creating more than what is there at first sight.. That can mean putting stuff together in a way that the other spectators never saw it, like you did here..
If the face of the kid would be a bit sharper this picture would like the picture even more, but that's just a detail.. Great job!

Superb composition and a very meaningful photograph. The child serves as a strong foil to the elderly man... Too worried about what is going on in the world to take and appreciate what he has - his life. Another foil in this photograph is the newspaper vs. the child - the majority of news is bad and morbid, but the child is extremely pure and innocent, full of life as opposed to death. I like how this photo has a wide crop... It really lets you focus in on the subject and interpret it.
Thanks for sharing!

Ah.. I was confused by the person behind the old man, she looks semi-transparent at a cursory glance. But now I assume it is a reflection on the glass giving this effect.

I like it just the way it is. I think cropping it would perhaps give more focus to the man and child but then the context would be gone. If more os the subway were gone it would just be the two of them and that would make it just about the contrast of the begining of life and old age. With the seats and everything in the forground it gives context that makes it more interesting. It puts it in an every day setting that lends to thought.

I'm not the fan of watermarks in the middle of the image, too, but I prefer to have a small one there... then it is not that easy for rippers.... damn idiots...
