In legend, when Doji was young and still human, he once went out at night around a lake and leaned against a bridge over a brook, and noticed how his face reflected in the water has completely become an Oni. He accepted the fate of becoming an Oni and fled north to a mountain in Tanba, and before long met Shuten-dōji and became his servant. That bridge was called "Ibaraki Dōji Sugatami-bashi"
