And well that's good to hear... BSD-tans are rare, even to this date I imagine. ^^'

fufu, thank you. ^^
Yeah, releasing the Sauce for my pictures is pretty much secondhand nature by now. I gain nothing by keeping it hidden, and a lot by opening it. ^___^
Besides, this was a collaboration pic (with ) as well, so it's only right that the Sauce be shareable to begin with. ^__~
Glad you find them cute, though not sure OpenBSD-tan would consider that complimentary. [and she's well over 180cm, so not someone you'd want to get angry, lol) ^__________^'

Thank you. And yes, touchΓ©... BSD-tans do need some love. Especially FreeBSD-tan (my fave). ^^
You can do anything with any kind of medium (I've seen some pretty amazing stuff done with typewriters and soda cans) -- you're really only limited to imagination. With vector graphics it's easier still because it's so precise -- hence you can get the kind of sharp, colorful, angular images that you find in most modern Anime.
But for more productive purposes (depending on the business, of course), vector graphics are invaluable for clip art and graphic designs (like logos and website components), so learning it is definitely not useless.
Give it a try, it's not hard once you understand that you're "sculpting" rather than "drawing". ^^
The main Inkscape tutorials are better, but feel free to view my own [incomplete] one if you'd like:

While I have studied the language and spent short bits of time there before, I am horribly lacking in the skill of its use at this time. My wife, however, can converse with a fair amount of ease.
I'm trying to increase my proficiency before I get there. Regardless, once over there it can do nothing but improve.

Fufu, if you haven't already checked them out, I recommend the 'Let's Learn japanese' video series:

Especially for someone like you who's had experience speaking it before, it should serve as a very quick and very comical refresher. Also love it for the nostalgia value (aaaaaaaah,... the 80's.... ^____^ ).

Thank you Katt-chama! >v<
Don't forget that you can download the special Sauce, so you can see how the folding works in action. As for what my technique is,... just starring at Bella's dresses for a while Fufu. ^.^
No but seriously, I first start off by turning the entire shirt the back color, and then draw the forecolor right over it. And like with hair, whenever you expect it to get "strandy", just start drawing some zig-zags -- except with clothing, you're literally imagining where all the peeks of the fold ridges are.
This is easier to observe in NetBSD-tan's kerchief, which folds a lot more at the point where it gets tied together.
Sorry if I changed the hair style on FreeB-chan a little, but hopefully it's not too different from what you drew in the ZS comic. ^^
Net-chan was fun to draw, and represents what C-chan wanted to do back when Net-chan waas first drawn back in OSC (he couldn't due to time constraints). So this one image is satisfying a lot of unfulfilled dreams already. ^^
Fufu! And you nailed it! Dragonfly-chan may look like mild-mannered and short, but deep-down inside she's an Amiga-obsessed nutball. >v<
And I guess mission accomplished with Open-san if you feel that way. ^^b
π: 0 β©: 1
C-quel In reply to Kattlanna [2009-05-24 02:41:23 +0000 UTC]
Fufu! Nope. if anything, it's a lot easier to draw now. ^____^
Big starting point with clothing is to fold first where folding should occur naturally. That means shirt collars, elbows, shoulders, he pleat of a skirt, etc.
Then, for plane surface, add semi-random intersecting curves, and make them REALLY large if they're thicky, heavy, bulky clothing (like sweaters), or very small if it's something like a polo. It's hard to give a technique really since clothing is so inexact.
Another thing you can do is to start grabbing random pictures off of google, trace the clothing of your choice (such as shirts) only, and then trace up the shade map over it. After you've done about 10 of these, a pattern to the madness will emerge. ^___^
You can then apply the same pattern to recreate folding on oe of your older pictures, to see if you got the technique nailed. ^.^

Thank you! And thank YOU for making this picture happen. Remember this is still a collaborative picture, even if you started it with that silly ol' C-chan. ^________^
I am glad you talked me into using that old FreeB-tan sketch -- not only did it allow me to finish the picture in record time, but it also put my mind at ease as to what to do with that sketch. In the end the pose worked beautifully here, since FreeB-chan does in fact have sass and confidence to spare. ^___^
NetBSD-tan I also have to thank you for, since you helped spearhead her design effort back at OSC. This just happens to be the first time I've drawn her personally (her bichromatic eyes are my favorite). ^-^
Note that I cheated with her hands a little, though. ^__~
Dragonfly-chan's sketch has of course been around for a while now, but I still remember the early EARLY sketch of her with the more timid-looking face. The keener expression is more appropriate for her character, though, as she's a bit of a firecracker. Not stronger than her older sisters, but fearless enough to make you think otherwise. ^^
I just noticed that I forgot to add the cover art to the Amiga NAU magazine. >v<
Well, no biggie,... it's understood what she's looking at. Maybe I can add in a little something later. ^.^
And yeah, might have made Open-san a little TOO leggy -- but then again, she is very tall too. Wouldn't want to get kicked by those. ^^'
Her head and hair, of course, were worked a bit to ratchet up the moe a little, taking cues from your sketch too. ^-^
Feel free to post this up at the club -- this is OUR pic after all. ^___~
Now that I think about it, though, we still have to figure out what to do about our PCLOS pic. I looked at it again recently, and I really don't want to keep it hidden forever because it's a good drawing all around. ^_____^

Thank you. ^___^
Yeah, you'd think Open-san would start whacking people randomly with that.
FYI, C-chan's original sketch of FreeBSD-tan had her holding her mace (in the form of the BSD logo), whereas Bella's sketch had her holding a pitchfork. Couldn't make up my mind which one to pick [and besides it didn't quite fit the pose], so I nixed it from the final.
But thought you should know (as a FreeB-user yourself) that FreeBSD-tan is armed and packing as well, even if she doesn't show it here. She's actually the strongest (or at least certainly the smartest) of the group. ^^'

Fufu! I wonder if you've ever watched Fate/Stay night, as the port suggestion kinda reminds me of Gilgamesh's ability to summon about 100 or so weapons and then nonchalantly choose one for the job.
Then again, FreeB-chan is not necessarily the bellicose type, so more often than not she would do that to scare an opponent away [rather effectively]. But naturally, any opponent stupid enough to stick around would get his ass beat to a bloody pulp. ^-^;
A "Packet Filter" I imagine would be representative of her primary defense mechanism, kinda like the Window-tan's [very poor] Firewall shields or the Ring spell as used by Multics-tan and VMS-tan.

Fufu! Did you try out the Download link above? That offers a version of my image at 3000x2400 resolution (almost all of my drawings have downloadable larger versions).
Unless you have a REALLY big laptop (or just luv yer quality ^___^), in which case don't forget that the original SVG file is also available above so you can open and export to any size you want (I think up to 100000x100000 or something like that). It's an Inkscape SVG, so if you can download Inkscape 0.45 or 0.46 at least, everything should be gravy. ^^
Dontcha just love how everything the BSD gurls touch automatically becomes free? ^_____________^

Haha! ^v^
Well, it is true that this picture took longer than usual given the depiction of FOUR non-chibi girls, rather than just the standard one. But all things considered, despite the near-two year delay since I touched BellaCielo's original sketch of this, it didn't take as long as I feared to finalize this. Thank goodness for Inkscape. ^^
In any event, the sauce is of course freely available, so feel free to modify the picture to your tastes. For example, you can swap out the original uninspired background for an actual photograph of some nice scenery (that was my original intention, but declined against it so I wouldn't have to embed such a large image). ^__^
And this is my last major picture for a while -- sure there's still Akane's wallpaper, but I reckon Risa-chan's wallpaper buys me a few weeks worth of time. From now on until I get really good at it, it's gonna be QT4, QT4 and QT4! >v<

doctormo In reply to C-quel [2009-05-23 15:09:40 +0000 UTC]
QT4, tut tut tut, are you programming for it? You deserve a break.
This picture is awesome by the way, but I begining to be dulled to expect such awesomeness from your work now :-P did you get my email about the printed ubunchu at the Anime Convention?
π: 0 β©: 1
C-quel In reply to doctormo [2009-05-23 15:44:44 +0000 UTC]
Fufufu,... yeah, I felt the same way about BellaCielo when she started creating really great artwork (with beautiful fold-work). After a while of non-stop swooning, my senses got dulled so I had to come up with wacky (and sometimes messy) new ways to proclaim my admiration for her work. ^-^
Break? From programming? Ha! never, cause I'm just gettin' started! Woohoo! ^v^
The BSD image was something of a mental block, because it represented a long-standing promise that I failed to fulfill. Contrary to what it may seem, that actually inhibited my ability to move on to many other projects as I always had this one failure nagging in the back of my mind.
But with it complete, I feel a weight off my shoulders and a grand feeling of accomplishment that proves that I, unlike my predecessor, can abide by a commitment. >v<
So now I'm free to turn a new page in my creative endeavor -- so literally, I see programming as something of a fresh new start. It's what I've always dreamed of doing anyway. ^___^
And yeah, got your email! Many many thanks for that, you're awesome!! ^-^

At the moment just learning, yes. Currently studying how to use Horizontal/Vertical/Grid layouts, how to nest them, and also how to create Splitters. I'm using the latest QT Creator, but I'm avoiding using Designer UI forms for now since they don't really allow me to understand how the underlying code works.
My immediate goal is to be able to just create a small GUI app without having to consult notes or books -- kind of how I'm able to create forms from scratch using VBA at work (I don't like it, but I've done it so often it comes natural to me now).
Long term I'd like to work on some edutainment games, and/or join the KDE development team. Trying to avoid proclaiming broad ambitions until I'm more sure of myself, though. ^^'
π: 0 β©: 1
doctormo In reply to C-quel [2009-05-23 22:54:08 +0000 UTC]
You see yourself as more of a front end developer? one of the reasons why I won't touch the KDE or Gnome developer teams is that they are stuck in their stubborn, egotistical ways and are utterly convinced that their contrived solutions to every problem must be embeded somewhere in their own camp's framework and couldn't possibly be LSB or freedesktop.info standards that everyone can use.
Sorry that came out more of a rant than I hoped. They just get my hackles going so baddly when they waste time developing all this good stuff and make it only KDE or only Gnome, so much of it doesn't even need to be in the UI layer, most of it is system guts and could be quite happily shared between front ends.
π: 0 β©: 1
C-quel In reply to doctormo [2009-05-23 23:20:38 +0000 UTC]
Fufu! Well you ARE talking with an artist you know, so naturally, all things being equally mysterious to me, I gravitate towards whatever looks beautiful. ^^'
But aside from a few other reasons why I feel inclined to work with the KDE team, I've also been a long time fan of their KDE Games and KDE-Edu suite, and would like to contribute (or help plug holes where I've seen them, especially in their latest 4.x incarnation). But that's just how I'd be willing to help from time to time.
My very own Edutainment game ideas, however, would be as OS-agnostic and WM-agnostic as my skill level would allow. Which is why I kept that old Mac PowerPC I adopted from its unappreciative owner, and also why I mentioned in a prior email that eventually I'll have to learn GTK. I'm usually very thorough about choices, so probably wouldn't necessarily be adverse to creating 2 or 3 different frontends for the same program.
But that I will be a GUI developer is a definite -- that's what I most enjoyed back when I was with PCLinuxOS. In contrast, it was those damn INIT scripts that killed me. >.<
