I walked under the trees
With their long leaves
In the forest of long ago
And when I drew near
I could hear
Them speak in voices low

Of creatures they knew
And things that once grew
And lived in the woods of their past
They said with a sigh
Why did it all die?
Why doesn’t beauty last?

I walked up to a tree
And said to he
Tell me for you are wise
Why speak of past things?
When each day brings
Something new to your eyes?

Well friend he said
And shook his head
We are afraid to forget
Though others are gone
We live on
We have our tales to tell yet

So under night’s veil
They told me their tales
Their stories, their poems, their songs,
I listened with awe
For I now saw
That they had been right all along

I no longer walk under the trees

Now they talk of me
