Description My annual Vincent Valentine piece (I have noticed that I draw him at least once every year, two times if I am lucky). I don't know how it became a tradition of mine but it's nice to have something to fall back to and compare every year!
He has been my favourite character for many years.

I am falling in love with my traditional medium all over again. Here, I've used Copic markers as a base for colour (just a light solid colour) and then going over to add shade and detail with Faber Castell Polychromos colour pencils. I add baby oil in areas of pencil that I really want to pop or smoothen. Anyone interested in my technique, please ask, I'll be happy to help and if enough people want to know, maybe I will make a tutorial in anyone is interested

I have recently been practising very hard with more dynamic poses, better anatomy and different backgrounds (I need to draw stuff besides flowers etc.)! I sincerely hope that I am improving in these aspects but who knows.
I kind of regret not doing figure drawings earlier in my high school years and waiting this long (in my busiest university years) but I guess better late than never.

Hope you guys enjoy my work!

I just read the description of this picture. I would definitely be interested in seeing a tutorial of how you colored this, especially since I use colored pencils for all my drawings as well. The coloring job is beautiful so I'd love to see the whole process of how it was done

I think you should have placed vincent a bit more to the right of the composiotion. Great pice though

C-Yen In reply to cilios [2016-09-29 19:19:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for commenting and fair opinion
I placed him more left aligned to give the appearance of jumping out of the background - hence why he's not restricted by the white borders. It's not the most conventional composition but it's the way it is for a reason.
Again, I respect your opinion and thank you for taking the time to drop a comment

YouΒ  are very welcome
I like your idea, I just think it would be better to move the whole composition abit toΒ  the side asΒ  it gettingΒ  a bit stuffed on the left.
Keep up the great work

Yesss, traditional!! I wonder, what exactly does the baby oil do? OvO

C-Yen In reply to nuttyjigs [2016-09-28 20:40:16 +0000 UTC]

Traditional is my love (don't tell my partner I said that shhhhh)
The pencils I use are Polychromos which are oil-based (instead of wax-based) so the baby oil liquifies the pigments making it smoother and more blendable. It can be quite messy to use though if you're not careful! But, basically it's how I get my traditional pieces looking brighter than how they used to be. If I ever have time, I might make a tutorial on it!

Woah, just looked them up! So those are the fancy-looking Faber Castells XD So they kinda work like watercolor pencils but with oil instead of water? Doubt I'll be getting materials like that anytime soon, but it's interesting.

C-Yen In reply to nuttyjigs [2016-09-29 19:24:46 +0000 UTC]

Hahah I guess you could think of it like that. Personally, I don't think you need fancy pencils to make great art. I spent 7 years just using normal Faber Castell coloured pencils and only just bought the "fancier" ones this year because I was getting bored of using the same old ones all the time.

I'm interested in learning new techniques
How do you come up with dynamic poses and backgrounds?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Yen In reply to CrimsonSeal [2016-09-28 01:53:42 +0000 UTC]

That's great!
How do I come up with them? By drawing a whole bunch of miniature thumbnails of different poses and then put background after. Hahah, I know that doesn't make much sense to you. To give you an example: here's the process of my Aqua piece www.instagram.com/p/BKNde5zDWL…
You can see in my sketchbook with mini blue thumbnails in the corner. Depending on the one I like, I make that into a sketch concept, followed by adjustments etc. and make it into a bigger clean lineart. Then all the colour etc.

To get better at dynamic poses, practise figure drawing whenever you can. 10-15minutes a day can go a long way! Don't be afraid to use references.Β  I generally use a mirror and take a photo of how I want certain body parts if I am stuck.

Wow that's a lot of drafts^^
I've been meaning to ask, but how do you enlarge a smaller photo without making it look weird when you draw it?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

C-Yen In reply to CrimsonSeal [2016-09-28 05:06:14 +0000 UTC]

When I am enlarging my pieces into a clean work, I scan the smaller one, adjust and fix things on Photoshop (flipping the image, find the mistakes or things that look weird) and then print it off onto a larger piece of paper. The image does get stretched and very grainy. I then trace via my window my concept sketch onto my drawing paper to get the general outlines and silhouette of my character and add details where I think needs them. I then ink everything.
You could freehand from small to big but this can take a lot of time, lead to more erasing and dirty smudges onto the clean work.
