Description “It was rather satisfying to see the expressions on their dirty little faces” - Generation X Vol. 1 #22 (16th Oct. 1996)

(LORE 📖)
The M-Twins (also known as M and Penance) is the superheroine nickname given to Nicole and Claudette St. Croix, twin Algerian mutant girls who are the younger sisters of M (Monet St. Croix) and Emplate (Marius St. Croix). The Twins are former members of Generation X. The twins possess many different powers, including the ability to fuse (or gestalt) with either each other or their siblings, transform their bodies into organic diamond with razor sharp claws, open and close interdimensional gateways and can read other people’s minds.

Following their brother Emplate killing their mother in cold blood, the Twins imprisoned him and their sister Monet (who was trapped as Penance) in a different dimension and decided together to impersonate Monet as closely as possible, both in order to survive and also absolve themselves of their traumatic past. The Twins would join Generation X, Emma Frost’s superhero team of young mutants, developing a persona as a snobby, uptight “superwoman”. During a battle with the Prime Sentinels, the Twins would be split apart and revealed to Gen X as two frightened little girls, causing shock and confusion amongst the team. The Twins would eventually be collected by their father, Ambassador Cartier St Croix, but not before finally defeating Emplate alongside Jubilee (Jubilation “Juby” Lee), returning Monet back to reality and freeing the “Penance” body the girls used by instilling it free will, creating Yvette in the process.

Claudette is neurodivergent and is mostly mute, save for private conversations with her sister Nicole and features the typical symptoms associated with the condition (poor social skills, difficultly with expressing and receiving communication and repetitive behaviours). As M, Claudette’s autism manifested itself as part of the twins shared identity, including suffering from catatonic episodes. These episodes were incorrectly ascribed by Beast (Dr. Hank McCoy) as aspects of autism, which in reality, it is not.

(PERSONAL THOUGHTS 💭)
G’day to ya. Autism Awareness (or Autism Acceptance) Day was yesterday at the time of me posting this artwork, and of course, as I am going to make this a tradition, I‘ll be dedicating all artworks for this month into highlighting and representing various autistic characters from across fiction and pop culture. I’m still undecided on whether or not to include any of my OCs as part of this tradition, as whilst I have written both Manimal and Ethan Bradbury to be autistic, they are also NOT proper characters (as in pop culture icons) with tons of material behind them like say, Tech from Star Wars or Symmetra from Overwatch 1/2, so there’s the problem of “oh, you’re just promoting your OCs by placing them alongside real characters” which is of course valid criticism (it is certainly an ego move on my behalf) but also the sad reality that there is too few notable autistic characters in pop culture and the majority of the time they tend to get the condition wrong or just flat out grossly misportray the condition to neurotypical audiences.

Now, this artwork here is a redo of my older “M-Twins (Claudette and Nicole St. Croix)” artwork from last year, and you can definitely tell the differences in terms of quality and style, it’s almost night and day. Now, I based Nicole and Claudette physical appearance off Emma and Kayla Silverfox from X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), which is why they kind of have this wonky look to their face as I tried to replicate the likeness of Tahyna Tozzi (Nicole) and Lynn Collins (Claudette) onto the new silhouettes for the twins. My techniques in drawing “organic diamond” are much better than they were a year ago, especially on Nicole who looks absolutely gorgeous especially the lighting and texture. Claudette is alright, an overall improvement from last time, but the real star of this artwork is definitely Nicole at the centre. I’ve also tried to incorporate more “Pop Art” esque styling into this art piece as well, just to help distinguish from the original and also well, I like pop art.

The M-Twins are way too obscure and unremarkable to add to the MCU, whenever they add the X-Men; they could appear as minor background characters in X-Men ‘97, but that’s really about it for them; they don’t have the story dynamics of say Emma Frost and the Stepford Cuckoos (even though their backstory is pretty damn wild all things considered) and if they wanted to add someone from the St. Croix family into either ‘97 or the MCU, they would probably opt for Monet anyways because, again, she’s got more “interesting” stuff going on narratively than say her twin little sisters.
