Twilight sighed in her private chamber. She hated putting on her new regalia. It was cold and uncomfortable, but she promised Celestia she would at least wear it during ceremonies. She cringed as the cold metal made contact to her skin through her coat. She removed it just as quickly as she put it on. She quickly scribbled a note to remind her to put some sort of fabric behind the piece next time she had to wear it. Placing the note on the mirror frame she slipped on her shoes and her crown. Everything was big on her still, even if she had grown a little bit more since her ascension to the sole throne of Equestria.
She was nervous, this was her first knighting ceremony. All she had to do was give the newest recruits their helmets to signify they were now part of the Royal Guard and had passed months to years of training. She had little role in recruitment of the guard. Twilight trusted her brother’s recruitment officers after all. She took a few more breaths before exiting her room. Two guards silently bowed before taking their places behind her. Twilight felt her legs wobble a bit as she walked. After an excruciating few seconds, she was able to sit on her comically oversized throne.
Twilight sat tall on her throne, putting on a small smile as royal guard members lined up on either sides of her throne. These were the top guards responsible for training the recruits, she knew that. Next would be the trumpet players. And behind them, through the door would be the ponies who had passed their training. The trumpets played and the soft sound of hooves marching in filled the room. One at a time, the ponies walked up, bowed, and had their helmets placed on their heads When they got up to stand in the line, Twilight dipped her head towards them.
It was a rather small group of newbies. She thought she saw some she recognized but she could never place her hoof on it. Then, the last pony made their way up, her green eyes shining. Twilight recognized this one. The large mare with muscles rippling under an orange coat with a blonde mane. The freckles across her cheeks confirmed her identity. Apple Jack was among these new recruits, after missing for months. Twilight was finally able to see her friend. She had to contain her emotions as Apple Jack closed her eyes bowed her head, waiting for her helmet. Twilight hesitated. She looked to the side to see everyone waiting. Twilight was known for breaking some traditions that the sisters put in place .
She stood up, walking down the ramp to Apple Jack, who kept her head bowed. “Apple Jack…” she muttered softly. Apple Jack kept her eyes closed, but Twilight noticed the slight twitch of her ear and her furrowed brow. She lowered the helmet slowly. She knew what this meant for Apple Jack depending on what she trained for. Finally standing up, she looked Twilight in the eye and dipped her head, taking her place beside the others. Twilight walked backwards and stood somewhere on the ramp. The guards continued their ceremony and left in lines.
Twilight made her way back up to her throne and relaxed after all the guards but 2 left .
Twilight didn’t understand why Apple Jack would join the guard. She was strong and would prove to be a strong member, but she had the farm didn’t she? Big Mac had already taken over before she disappeared. So maybe that was it.
The map at her castle had never called her for anything either, so maybe she just wanted to try something new and her destiny was to join. But this was a life time investment. Twilight sat pondering until a knock came at her doors. Sitting up straight again she cleared her throat.
“Come in.”
She watched as two guards, with Apple Jack trailing behind, walked into the room. They bowed.
“Princess, we know this is one of your closest friends, and she wanted to be your personal guard, she trained hard and we trust that she knows what to do and we believe you would trust in her the most to protect you.”
Twilight watched Apple Jacks towering figure bow behind the guards as they waited for her approval.
Twilight thought for a moment. “I would like that,” Twilight finally spoke. The two guards stood up and left quietly. She let her two guards beside her leave as she wished to speak to Apple Jack. As soon as they were gone Twilight races down the ramp, tackling Apple Jack with a hug, which she happily returned, finally dropping the guard act.
“Oh Apple Jack, we missed you, why didn't you tell anyone where you were going?” Twilight removed her helmet and watched the short mane fall down. “I just wanted to help ya out. I feel like I would be the only one who would be able to be there all the time.” Twilight knew she was talking about. Every pony else were doing other things. Apple Jack knew the farm would be in good hooves with Big Mac and Sugar Belle. With Apple Bloom and other apple family there to help during harvesting seasons, she disappeared. “I didn’t want anyone convincing me to stay. But I also just wanted it to be a surprise.”
“I’m just so glad you’re okay. Apple Jack, don’t ever disappear on us ever again!” Twilight exclaimed, embracing AJ with another hug. “I don’t think I ever could if I wanted to, Twilight.” They chuckled and they made their way back up to the throne, AJ taking a spot on the opposite side of Spike's seat.
