Description Murasaki Shikibu (c. 973 – c. 1014 or 1025), the author of the great masterpiece of Japanese literature, the Genji Monogatari (or Tale of Genji)

Believe it or not, it took me almost a week to come out with this version - I threw away some 4 or 5 already finished pieces before getting this synthesis. The writing says "Murasaki Shikibu - Genji Monogatari" although my shodō is completely wrong.

Drew with a Chinese brush on Chinese paper with Japanese ink.

LOL! That's not hard to believe at all. If you want to do this right, it takes a lot of time .

Love this!

My dear, when I decided to do a Japanese-like picture I didn't know it would be so hard! I started with a simple full figure drawing, copied it on the Chinese paper, but when I started to ink it my brush strokes were all wrong. Then I copied it two or three more times. I was almost going to upload one of those versions on dA, but then I realised it wasn't stylized enough. So I covered one page, paiting directly with the brush (without pencil) before getting this. I was despairing

thank you! Really, getting this was the hardest thing in a while... I started with a much more detailed image, and then simplified it to this.

I love the simple style here. My daughters and I saw a lovely exhibit of Japanese art. Lots of scenes from "Tale of Genji."

Thanks! I once saw an exhibition about Hiroshige Utagawa, and it was wondderful. In truth, the apparent simplicity is one of the most difficult thing to reach!
