It didn't need to be preserved, since it's only the hoof, which constists of keratin, that's a dead material. Just like your fingernail

It looks to be quite small though. a warmblood not a draft breed) where I ride looks to have bigger hooves than that, but I would have to see the length of the hoof. Its likely to be a Clydesdale or something smilliar

Really? I rode a few years ago - both warmblood and draft - and this hoof looks so incredible big, not at all like the size of the warmbloods I knew. I can take measurements if that helps.
