Description This is one of 's OCs, Exo. I made her for a contest.

At first I thought I was really going to dislike getting all those details on there, but in the end I really like the black and white detailing. All the design elements really mesh together well.

She's made of super sculpey over a wire and foil armature, painted with acrylics, and sprayed with acrylic matte sealer. She stands 6 1/2 inches tall.

Have you ever sculpted a pony using sculpy III? And how much clay do you end up using? Looks like that took a lot of clay O_O

I don't use sculpey III, I find it doesn't blend as well as super or sculpey firm. It's also not as sturdy. It takes a good amount of clay, but I build over foil to save clay. A pound of clay can yield between 2-5 ponies depending on complexity, pose, and size.Β

Ah, I was just curious 'cause all of the clay I have is sculpey III. I'd really like to try and make pony sculptures of my own, but the thing that's really difficult for me is the foil part, like trying to make it the right shape and stuff. And I also wasn't sure like how much clay it takes to make just one pony

With the foil, the mistake most people make is crumpling it up too fast so it becomes this dense little ball that can't be shaped. Start out slowly crumpling it into a large version of the shape you want, then slowly shrink it down until you have what you want.Β

By all means, go for it with the sculpey you have. The type of clay people like best is a matter of personal preference, so it may work for you. I would have at least 3 of the blocks on hand for sculpting a pony.Β

Thanks so much for all your help. Hopefully I can manage it when I feel up to the challenge. Not sure about painting them though I'm used to making all my faces and things out of clay.

I already entered, but some of us don't have the time and money to do something like this ;3;

I'm pretty sure you don't mean to be rude, but this comment has been bugging me so I'm just going to say something. By implying that I have more time and money than other artists you are saying that those things are what enables me to make good artwork. I have the time to do things like this because I choose to make the time between a full time job and a small business. My time is actually quite limited. And these materials are not expensive compared to drawing tablets, high quality oil paints, illustrating software, and about a dozen other mediums I could list off. Again, its my choice to spend my limited funds on these items, and the materials are not where my skill is derived.Β

My reply to you was meant to be encouraging and in no means disrespectful to the time and energy you put into your piece. Please think a little bit more before you make posts like this, your tone may have not been serious but its hard to communicate that in a purely textual format.Β

what do you paint with(acrilic, tempra...) or do you not paint and it's all clay?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CadmiumCrab In reply to rainbow-colurs [2013-09-12 04:36:28 +0000 UTC]

I paint with acrylics, tempera would be unsuitable because it would flake off and the colors wouldn't be as bright.
