Description
This painting features an immature Irish elk (Megaloceros giganteus), which is now extinct, as part of a series about young men and animals. Like species, some cultures, languages, and other personal characteristics also vanish. When I learn about past historical examples of LGBTQIA+ culture, I wonder just how much once existed that we can only glean small references to now. How many beautiful, unique pieces of queer culture have been forgotten by time?
I made this painting to tip my hat to those long-lost pieces of queer history which we might never recover. For that reason, this man is the last of his kind in ways I can only try to imagine. What do you suppose was different about him?
