Over the following weeks, little things began to return to Shane's memory. He could remember where the cereal was kept, but still couldn't seem to work out who any of us were. As much as I loved seeing him get better, a little part of me longed for everything to come back to him. I became more distant. I barely spoke to anyone but Shane. One afternoon, Laurence came and sat down on the sofa with me.

"Are you alright?" he asked worriedly.
"I'm fine." I replied. My voice was monotonous and didn't sound very sincere.
"No you're not. You've barely spoken for weeks."
"It's just hard."
"I know."
"No, you don't. You don't know. You got to keep your best friend. I had to lose mine."
"Shane is my friend too. And we haven't lost him. He's still here."
"His body is here, but really he's long gone. His soul is dead. He's not the same person anymore." I said angrily, balling my fists.

There was a silence.

"I just want MY Shane back." I whispered, my voice cracking. Laurence put his arm round my shoulder and gave me a squeeze and a reassuring look.
"You're going to get him back. I promise."
"How do you know?"
"I just do. Somehow, someday he's going to come back to you, Drew."
"I hope so."

I shot him a weak smile as he got up and left the room. I switched on the TV and tried to let the whole thing slip my mind.
