Description I made this cake for my grandmother's 80th birthday. She loves chickens/ roosters, so I decided to make a cake that looks like one. The internal support consists of carrage bolts, nuts, wood platform, and wooden dowels. The bottom of the support is all rice crispy treats, and the top of the chicken and neck are all chocolate cake with buttercream frosting. I enlisted the help of my dad to cut out all the feathers. The bottom of the board is covered in crushed graham crackers. Overall it took around 15 hours to put together.

The link to how it was put together is here: [link]

Very fun and challenging cake I'm sure. Feathers are always the worst in terms of how much work is involved, but I do contend that it's not quite a rooster without the distinctive tail feathers. Gumpaste and wire would've done the trick. Also, if you ever make another chicken or farm animal cake in the future, you can use drizzled tempered white chocolate (bunch it up) as hay.

Some one's a Debbie downer. I will remember that the next time I drive home for the weekend to make two cakes and stay up for 35 hours to finish them...I know a thing or two about proper cake decorating, time was a big issue for this cake.

Calm down. It was merely a critique.

Other side notes:
1. Mexican paste or modeling chocolate would have worked just as well in the time frame I had, but I did not have access to those items when I made this cake.
2. Chickens usually aren't around hay and hay is not white in color as you suggest. Just because you are making a farm cake does not mean you have to automatically use hay as a board cover, eg a pig cake.
3. This was my first ever free standing cake and I was mainly focusing on my constantly collapsing rice krispy treats on the underside of the cake stand.
4. I don't mind constructive comments, but I dislike comments meant to "teach" the propper way to make a cake that come from "cake decorators".
5. If you don't like my interpretation of an object recreated in a gravity defying cake form, then just ignore it.
