oh I baked it in bowl that I usually use for cereal. so I baked two hemispheres and started carving from that point. to see the size check my dA ID or this photo

mine was a bit over 13 cm but obviously you can use different sizes depending on how big cake you want to end up with

yes, I made a ball of cake layered with cream and than started cutting and curving. before you ask - the leftover part I cut from the base of skull was used to create the front (teeth)

Also: how did you make the skull brownish, you know, dirty, if you know what I mean? And how did you make the cracks?

you know you can brush and paint fondant after it dries with food colors and/or cacao deppending desired effect. so cacao+powdered food dye for brushing it dirty and liquid/gel dye for painting cracks
