Haha, yeah, I'm not gonna try to badger anybody else's enthusiasm for the project out of them. My personal opinion is... I guess I could say conservatively negative. I wasn't very impressed, though I don't think it's a bad premise. I just don't think it's being executed well as far as the character designs go. I mean, fans would've (and a lot have) eaten up the chance to see the older cast. From a design and art standpoint, I think the whole thing looks rather awkward. That's just my opinion though, and who am I anyway? XD

I wonder what the reaction was when SatAM was announced - it had a whole cast of non-Sega characters and a premise different from the games. I'm almost certain the fanbase was similarly divided, save for the fact the most common means of communication were different back then, and not everybody could learn about it simultaneously.

That's a really interesting question. I think at the time people were just desperate for any Sonic content they could get, also at that point Sonic's fanbase was almost purely made up of kids and kids are decidedly easier to please, haha. Now Sonic's original fanbase has grown up and gotten much pickier because they're more protective of their childhood.

Sonic's fanbase is divided into factions (or at least how I view it
Classic fans: Fans that primarily like the Sonic games from Sonic 1 - Knuckles' Chaotix (and maybe Generations, too.) While this is easily the most talented part of the Sonic fandom hack/fangame-wise, they also whine about crap like "green eyes" and they are often all-around bad people around Adventure and Modern fans. They also eat up any reference to the Classic games. Half of them understand that Sonic has changed, half don't.
Adventure fans (My faction Fans that primarily like the Sonic games from Sonic Adventure - Sonic Riders. While this tends to be the least demanding faction (all they want is SA3 and maybe Sonic Heroes 2,) they are also the #1 recolor-producing part of the Sonic fandom (Many of them (like myself) were born in the Late 90's/Early 2000's.) They aren't generally really talented except for a few special snowflakes. They understand that Sonic has changed. They just don't like it.
Modern Fans: Fans that primarily like the Sonic games from Sonic '06 - Sonic Lost World (and beyond if Sega doesn't go back on Boom being a spin-off.) It's not quite correct to judge them yet, since the majority of them are kids aged 4 - 8.
Comic/SatAM fans: Fans that primarily like the Archie comics and SatAM. Aside from being the main producers of good fan-characters and fan-art, I can't say much about these good. Most I've met are just whiny Amy-haters, Sally-lovers. They always beg SEGA to go by Archie's canon, instead of SEGA's canon. They usually hate Sonic CD and any Sonic game after Sonic Jam because it ruins SatAM/Archie's canon completely.

Yeah, I definitely see what you're saying, though I'd say in many ways the Comic/SatAM fans overlap with classic fans since they both come from the same era. I remember being a kid and eagerly reading the Archie comics. I never really got a chance to check out Fleetway back then, but now I look at some of their stuff and think it's shame we didn't get to see where they might've ended up.
The Sonic OVA was the best piece of animated Sonic fiction I've ever seen (still have it on VHS, lol). As a Classic fan I'd have to say it's by far my favorite and the one that does Classic Sonic the most justice. I liked SatAM and the other Sonic cartoons to a limited degree, but as a kid I didn't particularly like them all that much for anything other than the fact I was eager to get more Sonic in my life. I didn't care for the character designs or art style. The OVA was the complete flipside of all of that and when I first watched it as a little boy it completely left me speechless. It was the embodiment of how I had always imagined Sonic in my mind.
That said, I wouldn't say I'm a Classic purist, definitely not to the exclusion of the other factions. There are elements I love in each. I prefer to think of Classic and Adventure era Sonic as two separate universes. I never want to see the NEW Sonic disappear and be replaced by the Classic Sonic. I want to see them both get attention. I would happily buy into a multimedia franchise like Sonic Boom only going back and exploring Classic Sonic's world as oppossed to this new business.
I do believe they should remain separate, however. New Sonic's cast shouldn't be retrofitted into Classic Sonic-verse. I wouldn't want to see Rouge or Shadow running around in the Classic style. I have an in-depth headcanon for Classic-verse that I won't go into and bore you, haha.

The reason I separated Comic/SatAM fans from Classic fans is because Classic fans mostly accept the Japanese canon, on top of Archie still going on today.
I actually had a theory that Sonic 3 - Sonic Unleashed took place in a different universe from the Classics, but Colors and Sonic 4 continue from where S2 left off. My reasoning is that Sonic 3 - Sonic Unleashed had a semi-serious story, whereas Sonic 1, CD, and 2, as well as Colors and Sonic 4 had a non-serious one. I killed it when Generations was unveiled due to Sonic aging over the years of Sonic games.

Really? Most Classic fans I know are HUGE fanatics for the Sega America's Sonic Bible, haha.
That is an interesting theory. I personally can't reconcile the sheer amount of differences between the two universes, not enough to consider the Post-Adventure Era to be a continuation of the Classic Era. Personally, I really dislike Sonic interacting with any humans outside of Eggman/Robotnik. Sonic and his pals just will never look right alongside even semi-realistic humans and human environments.

I'm inclined to agree. I have to say, I think people are being so enthusiastic about this because they're just desperate to see Sonic come back into the limelight, no matter what form he might take in the process. It's the same reason I think so many of my fellow Mega Man fans are being so vehement in their support of Inafune's Mighty No. 9. Capcom's doing nothing but repeatedly getting fans' hopes up then destroying it with crap, so everybody's so desperate to see some sort of Mega Man comeback that they'll take anything Inafune does with a Mega Man vibe, even if in the process he's made it seem like he himself no longer cares for the character as much as he once had.
...I apologize, I'm getting off topic.
Back to Sonic. Sega seems to keep making really drastic reworkings and redesigns for the Sonic cast, jumping into new territories and styles and such instead of just listening to what the fans want more of (*ahem*Capcom*ahem*). I feel like Mario has shown us that, when handled properly, a character may very well never need a "reboot" or "alternate universe redesign." I've seen Sonic Boom compared to Paper Mario, but that's hardly the case. These designs don't show a new, inventive universe and gameplay shift based around a unique and quirky theme like Kirby's Epic Yarn and Paper Mario, it's more just a marketing campaign wrapped on designs I consider to be awkward and sub-par. Now, I'm not lambasting anybody that's excited for Sonic Boom. If you enjoy it and are looking forward to it, I'm very happy for you and I sincerely hope I'm proven wrong. Sonic is a franchise very near and dear to my heart. I feel like you can be protective without being a hater or a jerk.

oh that sans serif font dA is using is just soooo easy to read in a large block of text... Aaanyway...
You've got both things right, at least in my case. I don't own a console, so I'm restricted to bad PC ports (tried a dozen times to map buttons for Generations on a keyboard and not forget where each command is every 5 minutes) or emulator versions. SADX for PC was decent, though.
So it's pretty normal I look for any Sonic related content, and await Sonic Boom enthusiastically. Comics are easy to come by, tka.net holds scans of them all and then some. Some countries across the pond got only Sonic X, and I saw the third (best in my opinion) season being broadcasted only once (there was a short-lived episode of Underground being run, and a Christmas episode with a bad translation, but I didn't receive the correct channel, and again, it got to Youtube earlier than you may come up with the idea to tape it).
About the other thing... a quote, again on the unforgettable experience of a website that is TV Tropes, says that the intent to please everybody at once is a recipe for failure.
For example, I'm an obvious Tails fan (even more than Sonic - glad Lost World made him get rid of that Marty Stu affliction), I love his character design and his personality (maybe because it's so similar to mine lol). I loved the concept of Tails' Adventure (despite never playing it on the original platform, only on emulators) and want it would love to see it adressed again while retaining the Metroidvania feel. Sonic games have often suffered from bad cameras (and unexpected control switches, like in the avalanche section of SA or switches from 3D to 2D movement like in Unleashed), so I want this problem to be adressed. The character models from Unleashed till now I'm fine with, furthermore, I have absolutely no qualms about Sonic male characters wearing clothes (the concept art for Riders has them all in some kind of attire). This way, if Sonic Boom will have character-driven storylines which are intertwined like in SA, I may end up trying to figure out how to plug a Wii into a sub-par laptop.
There will always be somebody who'll feel their favourite thing about the franchise wasn't adressed in the new installment. It's not only a matter of reworkings and restyles; Sega has been taking the risk of introducing new content every single game since Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Thus, there are classic fans, there are Adventure era fans, there are Shadow fans, there are storybook era fans, fans of the Werehog, fans of Colors, fans of Lost World, fans of the sneak peek we got on Sonic Boom, fans of SatAM, fans of AoSTH, fans of Sonic X, fans of Underground, fans of Archie comics, fans of Fleetway comics, fans of its fan continuation, fans of fan-made games, fans of fan-made comics, fans of fan-made animations, fans of fan characters, fans of fan theories about all of the above (pointing out I missed a spot or a few is soo last year). Every single fan can be given a highly specific value of positive or negative reception they have towards every element of every installment.
An interesting and a bit similar thing happened to The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall. Since there were six possible endings, so to not choose one over any other and displease the fans, they made all of them happen at the same time and thus made them all canon. It takes a talent like the Bethesda team to pull such a stunt.
PS. Even putting the 2D games fans in one sack together may be risky. I apologize to anybody who lost the chance to get the last Chaos Emerald because on the last obstacle, Tails dropped the few rings he picked up. Venting their anger in form of Sonic.exe butchering the poor fluffball is not the way to adress this problem
Also, long post is long. XD

Tails was established as being inconfident with himself alone. That's why he tagged up with Sonic in the first place. Then again, he single-handedly fought the Kukku Army on Cocoa Island and foiled Eggman's ace-in-a-sleeve plan of destroying the city with a missile in SA, but then again, couldn't stand up to the monsters in Unleashed (I could have called shenanigans on that, but I could accept he was terrified - those weren't your usual robots after all).
But has he ever been a jerk? (except going a little hard on Sonic in Lost World)

I can kind of see what you're getting at... Lost World, Sonic fully deserved what he got though. I can imagine a team-up between foes against a common enemy isn't exactly so easy to accept from a character's standpoint as media shows, so Tails must've been legitimately mad.
In Colors however, both Sonic's and Tails' personalities are exaggerated, and Sega gave the latter a needless snarky spin, over which I'm a little torn. Sure, it is a much needed character development, but is it the right direction? I liked Tails' portrayal in the third season of Sonic X better, that is, just until apparently 4Kids decided to turn the whole thing into a Tailsmo drama (it may relate to my whole beef with anime emotional moments. They're like sweet rolls, they're good as long as they're fresh).
I need to brush up on the Generations storyline to find out what do you mean.

No, no, don't worry about making your posts long. I'm actually thoroughly enjoying our conversation, and I find your points very interesting.
I can see what you're saying. You'll never make everybody happy. To quote the Oakridge Boy's song, 'Trying to Love Two Women', "A man can't stock two shelves." I don't think I articulated my point very well before about giving the fans what they want, I apologize if I gave the wrong impression. Everybody wants something different, humans are quirky that way; however, what I meant was more that when you have a formula that had already proven to be as wildly popular as Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Sonic & Knuckles had you need to look more into what core qualities made it that way to begin with. Obviously there were elements everybody DID enjoy mutually.
I'm a much bigger fan of Classic Sonic Era than I am Adventure Era, but that doesn't mean that I'm not a fan of both to some degree. I think the Sonic Adventure series, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Battle (*gasp!*), and Sonic Generations were all fabulous games. Now there were many things I would've handled differently with the series, but I'm not the guy in charge and if I was I likely would do things that many people would disagree with. I do think that Sonic has been met with much harsher criticism than he deserved in recent years. Unleashed (what I personally played of it) was a very enjoyable installment, and Lost World looked very cool to me.
My problem with the designs is I, not to be repetitive, feel they look awkward. They're rather gangly to me. As a graphic designer and aspiring character designer, I feel they don't have any practicality to them. I'm not complaining about little things like Sonic's arms or anything, and I feel Tails' design is by far the best of the lot. More I feel they make no functional sense in the characters' stories or nature (though I may be speaking too soon and be proven wrong). I personally feel that an older Sonic should be sleeker and sportier. This design with the more ruffed quills, scarf, and sports tape gives me the vibe of a ragged wanderer or wasteland adventurer. Knuckles design, to me, is awful. I'm ashamed to admit that it's the fingers that bother me the worst, lol. Addressing the main problem for me, though, is that Knuckles never had to rely on a brutish physical structure to be the strongest. I feel the look makes it much less believable the way he keeps up with the rest while running. It also gives me the sense he's completely abandoned gliding and digging through the ground without getting stuck (two things I believe he's been shown doing again in the new game). To me it made sense for Knuckles to be slim but strong; he was agile and dexterous. I don't think a body builder makes for a good treasure hunter, someone who has to slip through tight spaces and maneuver his way through traps and puzzles. He looks more like he's just punch the whole place down (which, lately, Knuckles has been portrayed as the dull-type that would do just that).
P.s., I like Tails a lot now, but I have to admit I was one of those people who wanted to murder the little fluff-ball back in the day, haha!

Our posts have definitely gone into quality over quantity, and I don't have that pleasure all too often. I hope my language skills show some promise.
You're absolutely correct with the qualities of the first games being similar and that they drew attention for pretty much the same reason (what I actually meant was introducing new characters and gameplay styles). Something somewhere went terribly wrong though, and by the time SA came out, the general idea was that every franchise has to join arms-race that was 3D games development. If you don't give your in-game environments and characters that extra dimension to move around, you're going to be left in the dust. I wonder who got that bandwagon running and if you have any ideas, I'd be glad to hear (my bets are on the mustachioed plumber).
About Knuckles' design, I actually still can't believe my eyes. I didn't adress the problem earlier, because it still feels too unreal to me to be officia - like a bad 4chan thread idea, or a photoshop manipulation.
What happened to Knuckles in Sonic Boom is an extreme case oftvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php… ">flanderization. Let me explain from the perspective of a player/lets-play-watcher.
Knuckles is a character, whose introduction to the series is a masterpiece (in cartoony levels, albeit still). He punches out the unsuspecting Super Sonic, the strongest entity in the previous game (who in my opinion, rightfully inspired Fleetway to give him a mask of Mr. Hyde to Sonic's Dr Jekyll) and runs off with the emeralds and a mischievious chuckle. He's established both as strong and a master of his environments. Later, his strength, ability to glide and climb make him almost an equal to Tails in terms of ability to reach difficult places. He's quite naive though, and falls for the doctor's schemes both times - in S&K and in SA (I don't count the obviously recycled plot that appeared in the worst of the three cartoons).
Later, some of the traits have gradually subsided, and after SA2 I don't actually remember Knuckles to be able to dig (correct me if I'm wrong). His strength, complimenting Sonic's speed and Tails' smarts, has remained, but his gullibility has grown to straightforward stupidity - vide Sonic Riders and Sonic X. It wasn't the Knuckles who would wait for his pursuers in hiding and press a switch to drop the bridge from under them. Sonic Boom has gone a step further - did away with the original size (and the possibility of ever go underground on his own again). "The show's for kids, and we need simple straightforward implications - Knuckles is big, so he's strong". Well, Goliath of Gath was also big and strong...
For punching the place down to overcome an obstacle or solve a puzzle, I'll draw again from the bottomless mine of parallels that is The Elder Scrolls series. In Arena and Daggerfall, the first two installations, we had elaborate maze-like dungeons and loosely-tied-to-the-setting, and quite unconventional text based puzzles, however still of the sort you can ask a friend to solve while chatting and never bring up the games. The people who played those two the most were probably experienced fans of conversational RPGs, equipped with a notebook, a small set of rules and a handful of dies, and the reason to play was the obvious convenience of a silicon based gamemaster. They didn't mind the sprite based characters and low-poly textures, because it wasn't the point. Morrowind (2001) was a transitional game - the graphics became polygonal, and the intellectual challenges it provided were mostly story-related and moral judgement played a large role. The audience was of the mixed sort - some old gamers, some new.
Well afterwards things went downhill pretty fast. The exotic, outlandish environment of the island of Vvardenfell was no more (for and abridged version). What we got instead of the ragged, gritty, or simply morally dubious character were awful, round faced and generic dudes, living in a generic fairy-tale land of no sharp edges, and fearing an invasion fom Oblivion, which if it isn'y an obvious Hell ripoff, then I din't know what is. The whole aesthetics have taken a turn to the worse. And the puzzles came down to pulling a lever to open a gate that was two feet away.
Skyrim, while boasting amazing graphics, pretty much boiled down the game to a hack'n'slash, with an excuse of a main quest and loads of generic sidequests - nothing more than: go kill this dood, steal this lute from this dood, take this McGuffin and put it here. And the age of the average player can be best judged by the level of humour the memes and YT montages present.
Basically, both franchises - Sonic and TES - seem to become targeted to gradually younger audiences, who desire simpler plot and entertainment in a more visually attractive package.
An obvious question would be - well what do we do about it? How can we bring what we're the most fond of about our memories and experiences we have from any media?
My answer is: more fanart, more fan games and more mods (albeit by the Divines, keep them lore-friendly! Not every game which features melee weapons need a friggin' Sephiroth in it!). It is time we stop sucking up the mistakes the original author makes, if we feel we know better. All in all, it is, what we feel, the most entertaining.

Actually, I didn't even realize you were from Poland until just this moment. I'm impressed by your English skills.
Yeah, Mario 64 revolutionized the world of 3D platformers. Still, he didn't even need to be redesigned for that game, he's still virtually the same character as the one we saw jumping over barrels to save Pauline back in Donkey Kong '81. Also, Classic Sonic HAD dabbled into the realm of 3D game several times before the Adventure reboot: Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic X-Treme, Sonic R, Sonic the Fighters, etc. Unfortunately, though I thoroughly loved R and The Fighters (I might be a minority on that), 3D Blast was almost a universally hated abomination and X-Treme (which was in development BEFORE Mario 64) got stuck in development hell and never saw the light of day. Sad, because it really looked promising for it's time.
I completely agree on all your points about Knuckles. He used to be Sonic's most respected rival and begrudging friend. He was clever but still powerful. It was understandable for him to be naive, seeing as he grew up in isolation, but naive isn't the same thing as being stupid. I don't think you could be brainless and still make for a good guardian or treasure hunter. My mental image of a perfect Knuckles is one who is clever, wise, and with a lot of common sense to balance out Sonic's more cocky, go-with-the-flow impulsiveness and Tails' technological genius but childish naivete. I always felt like Knuckles should be more clueless about technology (being Tails' strongpoint), but extremely knowledgeable about history, mythology, mysticism, etc. He's lost a lot of what made fans fall in love with him back in the days of Genesis and Sonic Boom is the culmination of that slow decline, I feel.
On the note of the Elder Scrolls series (another of my favorites), I have to admit... Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are the only ones I've ever gotten to play, so I'm a little biased. Though I do see your point. The puzzles are a tad simplistic and repetitive. I think that's more symptomatic of the Elder Scrolls' new reputation for crafting breathtaking worlds and environment. The focus has shifted from puzzles to exploration, though I see no reason why they can't have both.
I think I agree with you there. I've really felt betrayed by many of my favorite video game developers over the past few years. Honestly, fans seem to be the only people putting out what I'd like to see from any of these franchises.
