The five pointed star is the star bethlehem (Christmas) and was long seen as a symbol o the five wounds of christ.
Also a powerful protective symbol.
Most of the pentagram nonsense you can read stems from stupid hollywood movies and wannabe satanists.
If you look closely you see also the magen David, or hexagram.
Both symbols are biblical - old testament and new testament.
Also used in Freemasonry - which based on biblical allegory and also on hermetism.

Thanks a lot for your explanation, I must say, I wasn´t aware of this iconographic relationship to the star of Bethlehem, but, of course, it makes sense.

Yes, the star of Bethlehem is even a Pentagram reversed: The Logos (God's spirit) is incarnating in the flesh through the birth of Jesus.

That´s a good question - I have to admit, I haven´t even recognised it. We were visiting this church shortly after christmass, hence all the other decorations as well. I take it, it´s just *another christmass star* ...

Thanks a lot again! Whenever you fly to Malta, do yourself a favour and spend a few days on the neighbour island Gozo. It´s even smaller then Malta (yes, that´s possible), but you´ll find hidden little gems like this (not so little) church, not to mention breathtaking landscapes...
